Blue Origin, the aerospace company founded by Jeff Bezos, has announced the hiring of Tory Bruno as the president of its newly established National Security Group. This strategic move is aimed at bolstering Blue Origin’s presence in the U.S. defense and intelligence launch markets. Bruno, formerly the long-serving CEO of United Launch Alliance (ULA), will lead the company’s national security initiatives and report directly to Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp.

The appointment marks a significant milestone for Blue Origin, as it seeks to compete with established players like SpaceX and secure a larger portion of valuable U.S. military and intelligence launch contracts. Bruno’s extensive experience in the launch industry is expected to provide Blue Origin with a competitive edge in this highly lucrative sector.

Bruno’s departure from ULA comes just days before this announcement, a position he held at the helm of the Boeing-Lockheed Martin joint venture that has traditionally dominated national security space launches, alongside SpaceX. At ULA, he was instrumental in overseeing the development of the Vulcan rocket, which is intended to succeed the Atlas V and Delta IV rockets and ensure ULA’s ongoing contracts with the Pentagon.

Interestingly, Blue Origin already has a collaborative relationship with ULA, supplying BE-4 engines for the Vulcan rocket. This means that while they are key partners in propulsion technology, they also stand as formidable competitors in the evolving U.S. launch landscape.

Blue Origin’s decision to enhance its focus on national security aligns with a broader industry trend, where private aerospace companies are being increasingly called upon to fill launch capabilities previously dominated by government entities. With Tory Bruno’s strategic leadership, Blue Origin is poised to make significant inroads into this essential market sector.
