As 2026 begins, individuals planning errands and outings may need to adjust their schedules due to the observance of the New Year’s Day federal holiday. While banks, post offices, and major stock exchanges will be closed, many retailers remain open, albeit often with adjusted hours.

Among grocery stores and pharmacies, several options are available. Albertsons will operate with reduced hours, while CVS Pharmacy locations will also be open but may have limited hours at some sites. Dollar General continues to maintain its regular business hours, ensuring shoppers can access everyday needs. Other stores like Food Lion and Wegmans will also be open, though Wegmans will start serving customers as early as 6 a.m. across most locations. However, the Brooklyn and Astor Place Wegmans will open at 7 a.m.

Major retailers are making it easy for shoppers looking for bargains or last-minute purchases. Best Buy is welcoming customers from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Home Depot will be open from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Stores such as IKEA will maintain regular hours from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Meanwhile, JCPenney will open at 11 a.m., with closing times varying by location.

Fast food and casual dining options also present a variety of choices on New Year’s Day. Many restaurants, such as Applebee’s, Burger King, and most McDonald’s locations, will be open for customers. Taco Bell will open its doors at 10 a.m., and Chick-fil-A, although open, may operate with limited hours, prompting customers to check their local listings before heading out.

Conversely, certain institutions and services will not be available on this holiday. Major banks will be closed in observance of the holiday, and post office locations across the country will be shuttered, halting mail delivery for the day. The stock market will also be closed, with regular trading set to resume on January 2.

UPS will not provide standard pick-up or delivery services on New Year’s Day, though the UPS Express Critical service remains available.

As people prepare to usher in the new year, this balance of open and closed businesses will shape how families and individuals navigate their day on January 1.
