Driving through Raub, a small town in Malaysia, the vibrant influence of durians on the local economy is unmistakable. A steady stream of trucks traverses the winding mountain roads, leaving behind the faint but distinctive aroma of this notorious fruit. Murals, sculptures, and welcoming signs proudly announce Raub as the home of the Musang King durian, a variety so prized that it has been dubbed the “Hermès of durians.”

Originally a gold mining hub in the 19th century, Raub has transformed into a thriving center for durian cultivation in recent years. This shift has been propelled largely by soaring demand from China, which imported a staggering $7 billion worth of durians in 2024, marking a three-fold increase since 2020. Currently, over 90% of the world’s durian exports are directed toward the Chinese market. Chee Seng Wong, a local durian exporter, notes that even a mere 2% of the Chinese population wanting to buy durians is enough to sustain the flourishing business.

The durian’s strong and divisive aroma, reminiscent of cabbage or rotten onions depending on one’s palate, has earned it the reputation as one of the smelliest fruits globally. Despite this, durians have found a devoted following in China, where they are increasingly viewed as a luxury item and status symbol, often seen on social media unboxings alongside innovative culinary creations like durian pizza.

Thailand and Vietnam dominate China’s durian supply, but Malaysia’s presence in the premium segment, particularly with the Musang King, is growing. Prices for these luxurious varieties can sprawl from $14 to $100, depending on quality and harvest season. Xu Xin, a durian importer from northeastern China, shares his journey of seeking out the best varieties in Raub, driven by a newfound appreciation for durian’s complexity.

As Chinese tour groups visit Raub to experience the fruit firsthand, they sample a variety of durians organized by flavor profile. Locals advise that the best tasting experience comes from consuming them in a specific order, revealing a range of flavors from caramel to custard. As palates evolve, Xu indicates that consumers are increasingly interested in diverse flavors beyond mere sweetness.

Among those transforming the durian landscape in Raub is Lu Yuee Thing, affectionately referred to as Uncle Thing, who owns several farms and a shop. His success story reflects the rising fortunes of local farmers, with durians bringing newfound wealth to the area. Uncle Thing emphasizes the hard work behind the seemingly lucrative trade, waking up at dawn to harvest the fruit while recounting the physical challenges that come with agriculture.

Meanwhile, China’s demand for durians has started to influence diplomatic relations, with the country entering trade agreements designed to celebrate ties with major producers and emerging suppliers in the region. The investments in infrastructure, such as the China-Laos Railway, have facilitated the transport of substantial fruit quantities, primarily durians.

However, challenges loom. Recent food safety concerns regarding Thai durians prompted scrutiny from Chinese authorities, and the growing popularity of durians in Vietnam has shifted some coffee farmers toward this more lucrative crop, inadvertently affecting coffee prices. In Raub, the landscape has also become contentious, as local authorities have removed thousands of durian trees claimed to be planted illegally on state land, leading to disputes among farmers who argue they have used the land for generations.

In China’s Hainan province, there are ambitious plans to cultivate domestic durians to reduce reliance on imports. While initial yields have been modest, Uncle Thing remains unconcerned, asserting that the quality of Malaysian durians continues to hold a competitive edge. As discussions around “durian freedom” take root in China, the fate of the Musang King, and the livelihoods dependent on it, remains uncertain yet crucial in the narrative of globalization and local economies.
