A Torrance man has been charged with attempting to extort Bitcoin from the family of Nancy Guthrie, who is currently missing following her alleged abduction from her home in Arizona. The disturbing allegation comes as authorities continue their search for the 67-year-old woman, whose disappearance has garnered significant media attention.
The complaint filed against Derrick Callella details how, just two days after local news outlets reported a ransom demand for Guthrie’s return, he sent text messages to her daughter, Savannah Guthrie, and son-in-law. In the messages, Callella reportedly stated, “Did you get the bitcoin we’re waiting on our end for the transaction.”
Investigators learned that Callella had created a fake phone number to send these messages, and through further investigation, the account was traced back to an email associated with him. During questioning, Callella allegedly confessed to sending the messages, claiming he was attempting to gauge the family’s response.
No connection has been established between Callella and the original ransom demand, although he faces charges related to transmitting a demand for ransom as well as harassment through telecommunications.
In light of these developments, FBI Special Agent in Charge Heith Janke has voiced strong condemnation of individuals exploiting such tragic circumstances for personal gain. He emphasized that imposter behavior would not go unpunished, asserting that the agency will rigorously investigate these acts.
Savannah Guthrie, co-anchor of NBC’s TODAY show, has publicly addressed the ransom letter reports alongside her siblings. They expressed a collective commitment to doing everything possible to secure their mother’s safe return and emphasized the need for verification of her well-being. In an earnest plea to the kidnappers, Savannah stated, “We need to know without a doubt that she is alive and that you have her. We want to hear from you and we are ready to listen. Please reach out to us.”
As the investigation continues, the family remains hopeful for Nancy’s safe return, while authorities work to navigate the complex situation involving ransom demands and potential threats.
