A new biopic titled Killing Satoshi, centered around the mysterious figure behind Bitcoin, is set to explore innovative filmmaking techniques that incorporate artificial intelligence. As reported by Variety, the film is directed by Doug Liman, known for hits like The Bourne Identity and The Edge of Tomorrow, with acclaimed actors Casey Affleck and Pete Davidson attached to undisclosed roles.

The project, first announced in 2025, has garnered attention not just for its subject matter but also for its ambitious use of AI. Unlike traditional filming techniques, the production team aims to utilize generative artificial intelligence (GAI) to enhance various aspects of filmmaking. A casting notice revealed that the producers reserve the right to modify actors’ performances and integrate advanced technologies such as machine learning to shape the final product. While no digital replicas of the performers will be created, the flexibility afforded by AI could significantly influence how audiences experience the film.

Furthermore, Killing Satoshi is set to utilize a “markerless performative capture stage,” where entire backgrounds and settings will be generated digitally by AI. This approach raises intriguing questions about the necessity and implications of using such technology, particularly for a narrative that revolves around blockchain, a subject often closely linked with digital advancement.

The choice to incorporate AI in filmmaking has not been without controversy. In the film industry, concerns have been raised regarding the potential for actors to be replaced by AI, leading to heightened scrutiny during SAG-AFTRA’s 2023 contract negotiations. The discussions highlighted the urgent need for protections against the unauthorized reproduction of actors’ likenesses and voices. Likewise, in the UK, the actors’ union Equity is currently working to address similar concerns, ensuring that members are not exploited by studios leveraging AI technology.

Despite the challenges and ethical questions posed by this new approach, Liman’s track record suggests he may be unafraid to push the boundaries of conventional storytelling. The integration of cutting-edge technology in Killing Satoshi reflects a broader trend in the industry, which increasingly seeks to innovate while navigating complex questions about the future of creativity and AI-driven art. As production progresses, audiences will be watching closely to see how this unique blend of cinema and technology unfolds.
