In a significant development for students at the University of Michigan, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan has announced that it will maintain in-network coverage for those seeking treatment through University Health & Counseling service clinics. This decision remains effective even if a new contract agreement with Michigan Medicine is not finalized before the upcoming June 30 deadline.

This announcement marks a notable shift from what was communicated just days earlier. On March 6, 2026, the health insurance provider indicated to the Detroit Free Press that ongoing negotiations for a new five-year contract with the University of Michigan’s academic medical center were faltering. At that time, patients were warned that a failure to reach an agreement would result in their in-network coverage being eliminated starting July 1.

The news has been met with relief by students and staff at the university, who rely on these services for essential health care and counseling. The continuity of coverage allows students to access necessary medical support without the financial strain of out-of-network rates.

As the negotiation process continues, stakeholders are hopeful that a mutually beneficial contract can be established, ensuring that students continue to receive the comprehensive care they require at manageable costs.
