Gemini Layoffs Crypto 1200x675

As bitcoin continues to languish approximately 44% below its all-time high of around $125,000, several prominent cryptocurrency firms are announcing significant staff reductions amid increased focus on artificial intelligence (AI) integration. Notable among these is Crypto.com, which revealed on Thursday that it plans to cut about 12% of its workforce. CEO Kris Marszalek emphasized that departments failing to adapt to the company’s AI initiatives would be specifically impacted. He noted on social media platform X, “Companies that do not make this pivot immediately will fail.”

This shift towards AI is not unique to Crypto.com. Gemini, the crypto exchange co-founded by the Winklevoss twins, has also conducted layoffs, trimming approximately 30% of its workforce since the beginning of the year. The company’s leadership is undergoing a shakeup, with key executives including the chief operating officer, chief financial officer, and chief legal officer recently exiting. In light of declining stock performance, which has seen Gemini’s stock plummet 84.72% since its listing, the firm is also contending with a class-action lawsuit from investors alleging insufficient disclosure regarding its shift towards prediction markets.

Other firms in the crypto space are similarly signaling a move towards AI in response to the challenging market conditions. Messari, a crypto market data startup, has undergone layoffs as part of a strategic restructuring into an “AI-first” company. Block, once known as Square, has also made headlines for announcing large layoffs attributed to its own AI integration efforts.

While the public narrative centers around AI as the rationale for these layoffs, some industry critics question whether this trend is coincidental or merely a convenient explanation for broader market issues. Historical patterns show that crypto startups often downsize during bear markets, leading some to speculate that AI is being used as a scapegoat for larger economic challenges facing the industry.

In tandem with the layoffs, numerous bitcoin mining companies are pivoting towards AI in an effort to diversify revenue streams. Some, such as Cango and Bitdeer, have even divested their entire bitcoin holdings to explore AI ventures. “The two businesses are in one ecosystem,” stated James Cheng, CFO of bitcoin mining hardware manufacturer Canaan, highlighting the potential synergies between bitcoin mining and AI.

The mining sector has not been immune to the financial strain caused by declining bitcoin prices, which have drawn criticism for failing to stabilize as a safe haven asset amid geopolitical uncertainties. Interestingly, bitcoin demonstrated greater resilience in the early stages of the conflict in Iran compared to previous tensions in other regions.

Historically, assets like gold have outperformed bitcoin during turbulent market periods, raising questions about bitcoin’s viability as a hedge. This analysis gains traction as the recent bitcoin downturn is attributed to perceived hawkish policies from the Federal Reserve, reinforcing views that bitcoin remains a risk-on asset susceptible to broader market fluctuations. As the cryptocurrency landscape evolves, the dual focus on AI and strategic pivots may be crucial for firms aiming to navigate the turbulent waters ahead.
