Senator Elizabeth Warren has reached out to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, requesting access to documents and communications concerning Bitmain, a Chinese company that plays a significant role in the global market for Bitcoin mining equipment.
In November, US authorities initiated an investigation into Bitmain, codenamed “Operation Red Sunset,” which is spearheaded by the Department of Homeland Security. The investigation is aimed at determining whether Bitmain’s application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) machines could be remotely accessed, posing potential risks for espionage or even disrupting the US power grid. As reported by Bloomberg, the status of this investigation remains unclear, and similar national security inquiries often take years without any public updates or legal proceedings.
Concerns regarding Bitmain are not novel. A federal review in 2024 highlighted raised “significant national security concerns” associated with the use of Bitmain machines near a US military installation. Furthermore, authorities previously suspended shipments of Bitmain devices, launching an additional inquiry into a related Chinese chip firm due to its ties to the sanctioned company Huawei.
Amidst this heightened scrutiny, Bitmain is reportedly gearing up to establish its first ASIC manufacturing facility in the United States, with an anticipated start of chip production in early 2026, followed by scaling efforts by year-end, as stated by Bloomberg.
The involvement of the Trump family in the Bitmain saga adds a layer of complexity to the situation. Bitmain’s machines are extensively utilized within the industry, including by American Bitcoin Corp., which counts Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr. among its investors. Last year, American Bitcoin Corp. struck a deal to acquire 16,000 Bitmain rigs for $314 million.
In her letter, Senator Warren also requested details regarding any communications between Bitmain, the Trump family, and officials at the Department of Commerce. She further inquired about the measures taken to ensure that national security assessments remain uninfluenced by political affiliations.
As of now, neither Senator Warren’s office nor Bitmain has provided responses to inquiries for comments.
