Naoris Protocol has officially launched its mainnet, positioning itself as a pioneering blockchain solution that integrates post-quantum cryptography from the outset. This innovative approach utilizes algorithms that have received approval from the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), signaling a move towards future-proofing against the potential threats posed by quantum computing.

As the reality of quantum technology progresses, experts are increasingly concerned about the vulnerabilities of existing cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. Current blockchain security relies heavily on public-key signatures, notably the elliptic curve digital signature algorithm (ECDSA), which, while secure against classical computers, could face dire threats from quantum computers exploiting Shor’s algorithm. This capability could allow malicious actors to derive private keys from public keys, thus compromising wallet security.

Addressing these advancements, Nathaniel Szerezla, the chief growth officer of Naoris Protocol, emphasized the company’s commitment to using the finalized NIST standard rather than earlier, experimental algorithm versions. “Most blockchain projects experimenting with post-quantum signatures treat ‘Dilithium’ and ‘ML-DSA’ as interchangeable labels,” Szerezla explained. “Naoris treats them as a hard boundary.” The ML-DSA is the NIST-standardized iteration of the CRYSTALS-Dilithium algorithm, a cornerstone of Naoris Protocol’s infrastructure.

The launch of Naoris comes at a crucial juncture in the blockchain ecosystem, where significant debates are ongoing about how to transition existing networks to quantum-resistant cryptography. In this context, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has outlined strategies to overhaul several components of the Ethereum protocol, advocating for the adoption of alternatives to traditional cryptographic methods susceptible to quantum attacks.

Similarly, Bitcoin developers are exploring solutions detailed in BIP 360, which aims to mitigate public key exposure by introducing a novel output type, known as Pay-to-Merkle-Root. This approach minimizes the risks associated with key-path spending, providing a pathway for the future incorporation of post-quantum signature schemes via soft forks.

The permanence of blockchain transaction histories complicates the landscape further; once a transaction is recorded, its cryptographic signatures remain accessible indefinitely. If quantum computing reaches a level where it can compromise these signatures, the implications for security could be severe. To address this potential vulnerability, Naoris Protocol has incorporated mechanisms that enforce a transition from classical signatures. Once an account is designated as using post-quantum cryptography, the system ensures that all transactions from that account adhere to this standard.

“The system enforces a hard, irreversible transition,” said Szerezla. “If the sender’s address has a PQC binding in the registry, the transaction must contain a valid ML-DSA inner signature.” Any attempt to use ECDSA from a PQC-bound account would be met with an error, prompting users to ensure compliance with the new standards.

Currently, Naoris operates with a limited number of validator operators while gradually expanding its network participation. Prior to the mainnet launch, Naoris reported that its test network successfully processed over 106 million post-quantum transactions and identified more than 603 million security threats, although these figures have not been independently verified.

Importantly, Szerezla noted that Naoris cannot retroactively secure assets already on traditional blockchains. Users will need to migrate their assets to Naoris to benefit from its quantum-resistant protections. “Assets moved to Naoris become quantum-secure while those left on classical chains remain vulnerable,” he explained, underscoring the urgency for users to act swiftly to minimize exposure to potential quantum threats.
