Blockchain data has revealed that the U.S. government has transferred over $600,000 in Bitcoin related to the notorious 2016 Bitfinex hack. These funds, approximately 8.2 BTC, were moved from a government-held account to Coinbase Prime, sparking speculation about an impending sale of the assets.
The coins, valued at around $628,000, were last transferred two years ago, originating from a different government wallet tagged by Arkham Intelligence as “Bitfinex hacker seized funds.” As of now, a representative from the Department of Justice has not responded to inquiries regarding the connection of these coins to Bitfinex or the reason for their recent transfer.
Typically, moving crypto assets to an exchange indicates a potential sale; however, the government’s specific intentions regarding the transferred Bitcoin remain unclear. Notably, this transfer accounts for merely a small portion of the larger sum of over 94,000 BTC that the U.S. government seized during its investigation and the subsequent arrest of Ilya Lichtenstein and Heather “Razzlekhan” Morgan. The seized funds are currently valued at more than $7.2 billion.
Ilya Lichtenstein, identified as the mastermind behind the heist, exploited a security vulnerability on the crypto exchange that resulted in the theft of 119,754 BTC, equivalent to $9.18 billion at today’s prices. Arrested in 2022 on charges of conspiracy to commit money laundering, Lichtenstein later pleaded guilty in 2023 and received a five-year prison sentence for his crimes.
Meanwhile, Morgan, a rapper and Lichtenstein’s wife, also faced money laundering charges and was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison. Before their sentences were applied, the couple reached a plea agreement with prosecutors in 2023, agreeing to forfeit the remaining proceeds from the nearly 120,000 BTC stolen from Bitfinex.
Recently, both Lichtenstein and Morgan were released from prison and publicly credited former President Trump for their early release, although there are no official records indicating that the president took any actions to commute their sentences. In a recent statement, Morgan expressed appreciation, saying, “I want to give a shoutout to Papa Trump for making my 18-month sentence shorter,” adding a celebratory remark that captured public attention.
