In a groundbreaking artistic endeavor, Anik Malcolm has spent over 900 hours meticulously creating a stunning oil painting titled “The Whole Entire Universe.” This ambitious work seeks to visualize the abstract nature of Bitcoin, representing each of the 21 million bitcoins as an individual bead. The painting is set to debut at the prestigious Bitcoin 2026 conference at The Venetian Resort in Las Vegas, where attendees will witness the artistic representation of a number that has both captivated and perplexed many.
The concept emerged from a straightforward yet profound idea: to bring the often intangible figure of 21 million bitcoins to life. Malcolm, influenced by a conversation with his wife, Una, who is also an artist, decided on a cube of beads as a fitting representation. “A cube is such a deeply ubiquitous symbol in bitcoin, visually and metaphorically,” he explained. The idea of using beads, one of the earliest forms of currency, complemented this vision perfectly.
As he began the project, Malcolm encountered mathematical coincidences that added layers of depth to his work. He discovered that when rounding the cube root of 21 million to the nearest whole number, 276, and then cubing it, he arrived at 21,024,576. This surplus of 24,576 evenly divided by six, allowing for symmetry in his cube design. Further calculations revealed connections to the number 4,096, whose square root is a power of two and can be divided down to 2×2 squares. This pattern mirrored Bitcoin’s halving mechanism—a process crucial to the cryptocurrency’s architecture.
Malcolm described this discovery as both exhilarating and humbling. He felt a sense of divine providence, as if the symmetry of the numbers had been waiting to be uncovered. “I knew right away that I had been entrusted with a very meaningful project,” he stated.
The creation of the painting itself was a deeply meditative process, where every detail required careful consideration. Each bead represents an individual bitcoin, and the labor of painting each one—considered three times for body, highlight, and shadow—turned out to be a therapeutic ritual. Over time, Malcolm found that his interactions with music and personal mantras while working significantly influenced his experience, creating a profound connection to both the artwork and the concept of Bitcoin itself.
This project has evolved from initial drawings to digital renderings, culminating in the full-scale oil painting, with plans for a monumental public sculpture in Roatán. Each iteration demands a larger format, reflecting the ever-expanding significance of the concept behind 21 million bitcoins. The sculpture, crafted from larger beads, promises to command a grand physical presence that embodies the essence of Bitcoin.
The field of observers is eagerly anticipating the unveiling of this intricate work, including notable figures in the cryptocurrency community like Adam Back. Malcolm hopes that even those without a mathematical background or interest in Bitcoin’s technical details will appreciate the calming effect of the cube’s symmetry and the meditative experience of viewing the artwork.
Malcolm’s project ultimately seeks to transcend the numeric abstraction of Bitcoin and connect with the human experience. “The Whole Entire Universe” not only embodies a meticulous count of 21 million but also represents a broader narrative about the evolution of currency and the philosophical underpinnings of value itself. As the world moves towards representing digital assets in tangible forms, Malcolm’s work stands as a testament to the intersection of art, mathematics, and cryptocurrency.
