The FBI has become involved in the investigation of the suspicious disappearance of 74-year-old Naiping Hou, a Rancho Cucamonga grandfather, as concerns grow about the possibility of foul play linked to his family’s success in the cryptocurrency sector. Federal authorities joined local law enforcement to probe the troubling circumstances surrounding Hou’s disappearance, reported as an incident following a series of alarming events over the past few months.
Naiping Hou, father of prominent hedge fund and cryptocurrency investor Wen Hou, was last seen on March 18, 2025. His son, a chief investment officer at Coincident Capital, stated that Naiping was reported missing on May 4, 2025, after a concerning pattern of behavior became evident. Wen Hou had perceived strange alterations in his father’s text messages, which became less personal and more robotic. His worries intensified on May 3, the day before Naiping’s birthday, when he noticed his father’s reluctance to engage with family — a stark contrast to previous years.
In a desperate effort to locate his father, Wen Hou had family friends check on him. Upon their visit, they discovered an unnerving scene: an unopened package of handmade Chinese noodles left on the doorstep, along with indications that the home had been stripped of most furniture and a poorly executed interior painting hinted at hasty exit.
Investigators have since discovered evidence that suggests someone had been impersonating Naiping Hou through his cellphone, executing fraudulent bank transactions, including the purchase of gold bars, which raised further alarms due to Naiping’s lack of technological proficiency and prior inexperience with buying gold.
The family’s previous attempts to understand the motive behind Naiping’s disappearance have pointed toward the potential for a kidnapping case. The Hou family’s financial achievements in cryptocurrency, particularly a substantial contribution of $1.1 million made by Wen and his wife to the USC Keck School of Medicine to support heart disease research, have led them to believe that his success may have made him a target.
Wen Hou expressed his deep concern for his father in previous statements, at one point describing Naiping as a guiding figure in his life. As the investigation unfolds, the FBI has emphasized the urgency of the case, stating it warrants public assistance. A tip website established by Wen to aid in locating his father currently offers a $250,000 reward for information leading to Naiping’s whereabouts.
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with relevant information to reach out to their local FBI office or the nearest American Embassy or Consulate.
