A remarkable incident unfolded aboard a Delta Air Lines flight from Atlanta to Portland on Friday night when a passenger unexpectedly gave birth to a healthy baby girl shortly before landing. The flight, which was carrying 153 passengers, took a dramatic turn as the mother, Ashley Blair from Tennessee, went into labor approximately 30 minutes away from Portland International Airport.

As the airplane approached its destination, two paramedics on board, Tina Fritz and Kaarin Powell, who were returning from a vacation in the Dominican Republic, quickly sprang into action. Initially called to assist with a separate medical issue affecting another passenger, they were later asked to check on Blair when flight attendants noticed her distress.

Upon confirming that Blair was indeed in the process of labor and that contractions were coming closer together, the paramedics initiated preparations for the delivery. With the flight full and space at a premium, they began to move seated passengers away from Blair to create room for the impending childbirth.

The paramedics requested blankets and an obstetrical kit from the flight attendants, but when neither was available, they improvised. They borrowed blankets from other travelers and creatively used a shoelace to tie off the umbilical cord. In a resourceful move, Powell used one of her own shoelaces as a tourniquet to start an intravenous line.

As the aircraft neared the runway, tensions rose. Blair’s delivery was imminent, and the expectant mother exclaimed, “OK, it’s time. I got to push.” Despite the flight attendants urging the paramedics to take their seats for landing, Blair pushed just three times, resulting in the rapid arrival of her daughter, Brielle Renee Blair, who weighed 5 1/2 pounds. Powell cut the umbilical cord just as the plane touched down.

Once the aircraft was taxied to the jetway, the paramedics handed the newborn back to her mother, and the passengers celebrated the incredible moment by taking pictures. A crew from Portland Airport Fire & Rescue promptly arrived at the scene, ensuring that both mother and baby were in good health before transporting them to a local hospital for observation.

In a statement, Delta Air Lines expressed their gratitude to the flight crew and medical volunteers who provided care during the emergency. They emphasized that the health and safety of passengers remain their top priority and extended well wishes to the new family. While Delta mentioned the presence of a doctor and two nurses on board, Fritz clarified that only a nurse attended to the other medical issue prior to the birth.

Fritz, who has been in contact with Blair since the incident, expressed her surprise at the level of attention they received. She described their bond as something that would last a lifetime, stating, “I feel like we’re friends now forever.”
