According to Stephanie Wilks-Wiffen from eToro, the investment landscape is changing, particularly for women. The turning point, she suggests, came in mid-2024 when the annual Boring Money report highlighted a widening gender investment gap in the UK, revealing that nearly 60% of investors are men. In response, eToro initiated its “Loud Investing” campaign, aimed at educating and empowering women in their investment journeys. This approach is part of a broader movement, as various initiatives targeting female investors are beginning to surface across the financial industry.

Over the past year, Wilks-Wiffen has observed an increase in female-led initiatives. Online brokers are rolling out campaigns designed to engage women, producing “female finance” podcasts, and sponsoring women’s sports teams. She emphasizes the importance of diverse messaging, believing that if one campaign doesn’t resonate, another initiative may succeed.

Women have historically been underrepresented in investing, holding about one-third of stock market stocks, with numerous barriers continuing to inhibit their participation. Factors such as lower average earnings compared to men affect their ability to invest, compounded by a lack of financial education in their formative years. Additionally, women have faced systemic exclusion from finance, notably in the UK, where they were prohibited from trading floors and required to obtain male consent for financial services until the mid-1970s.

To change the narrative about women investors, Wilks-Wiffen suggests a shift in rhetoric is necessary. Emphasizing qualities like patience and discipline may create a more inclusive environment for female investors. eToro has started featuring more female presenters in its educational materials and is actively addressing the psychological barriers that first-time investors often encounter.

Research supports the notion that women can be successful investors. Professor Ylva Baeckström of King’s College London points out that while traditional perspectives spotlight women’s risk aversion, it’s often overconfidence that leads to poor performance among male investors. Studies show that when women do invest, they frequently outperform men. The Warwick Business School found a 1.8 percentage point advantage when comparing women’s investment returns to those of men.

Additionally, women’s investment priorities tend to differ; they often prioritize sustainable investments and are more inclined to consider environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors. Christine Yu, co-founder of financial education platform Sophia, notes that women approach finances distinctively, yet their needs remain underserved.

From a financial standpoint, engaging more women in investing is seen as beneficial for the entire industry. Baeckström highlights that addressing this gender gap could lead to a $700 billion revenue increase for financial services. Furthermore, as women’s wealth is projected to grow significantly—particularly through intergenerational wealth transfer—the potential for financial service providers is substantial.

The emergence of “finfluencers” and online communities also reflects an industry shift toward attracting female investors. This development underscores the demand for inclusive financial guidance. However, Yu cautions about the risks of misinformation and scams that may arise from unregulated financial content online.

As for tangible progress, younger generations exhibit a smaller investment gap. Recent research indicates that in Germany, more women began investing in the stock market than men over the past year. Young adults aged 18 to 30 demonstrate increased receptiveness to online trading platforms. In the United States, 25-year-olds’ participation in the stock market jumped from 6% in 2015 to 37% in 2024.

Despite this upward trend among younger women, experts urge caution. There is a concern that the gains may not be consistent over time. Research indicates that the gender investment gap often widens as women reach their 40s and 50s, owing to life stages tied to family responsibilities. While some women may re-engage in investing following life changes such as divorce or loss, the long-term trajectory remains uncertain.

Baeckström warns against complacency in interpreting recent trends and stresses the necessity for substantial systemic changes to promote lasting equity in investment participation. As the finance industry continues to evolve, the imperative to ensure that women are adequately supported and represented remains a pressing challenge.
