Coinbase has announced significant layoffs as part of a restructuring focused on integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into its operations. In a blog post, CEO Brian Armstrong revealed that approximately 14 percent of the company’s workforce will be affected, translating to nearly 700 employees.

Armstrong emphasized the transformative impact AI has had on productivity within the company, noting that engineers have been able to complete tasks in days that previously required weeks of teamwork. He highlighted how non-technical teams are now actively contributing to software production, reflecting a broader shift towards automation at Coinbase.

“This has led us to an inflection point, not just for Coinbase, but for every company,” Armstrong stated. He warned that failing to adapt could pose significant risks. The CEO asserted the need for Coinbase to return to the agility and focus reminiscent of its startup days, with AI positioned at the center of its strategy.

In the context of ongoing trends, many tech firms have justified workforce reductions by citing the efficiencies gained through AI. For instance, Meta recently announced the elimination of 8,000 jobs, while Amazon had laid off 14,000 employees last October.

However, Coinbase’s restructuring is not solely driven by the push for AI integration. Armstrong pointed out that the cryptocurrency market is currently facing declines, prompting the company to become more lean and efficient in preparation for a potential market rebound. To this end, the organization is streamlining its management structure and creating teams that consist of “AI-native talent” capable of overseeing multiple tasks and driving significant results. Armstrong also mentioned potential experimentation with smaller team sizes, including “one person teams” that consolidate roles of engineers, designers, and product managers into a single position.

For those impacted by the layoffs in the United States, Coinbase is offering a severance package that includes 16 weeks of base pay, plus an additional two weeks for each year of service. Employees will also receive their next equity vesting and six months of COBRA health coverage. Similar severance packages will be extended to affected workers in other regions, as outlined by Armstrong in his communications.
