Stelios Haji-Ioannou, the founder of easyGroup, renowned for its budget airline easyJet, is making a significant foray into the cryptocurrency space with the launch of the easyBitcoin app. This initiative is part of a brand licensing agreement with the crypto exchange Uphold and marks a notable expansion within the diverse portfolio of brands under easyGroup, which includes various businesses from gyms to coffee shops.
Haji-Ioannou aims to democratize Bitcoin trading by addressing the barrier of high transaction costs that have historically limited access for the average consumer. In his statement, he expressed a vision of making investment opportunities in Bitcoin more inclusive: “For too long, investing in Bitcoin has felt like an exclusive club, out of reach for the general public with very high transaction costs.”
The easyBitcoin app will allow users not only to purchase Bitcoin but also to earn rewards on their investments. The initial launch of the app is set to take place in the United States, with plans for a rollout in the UK anticipated in 2025. Despite this ambitious entry, Haji-Ioannou is stepping into a crowded market that includes established crypto trading services from companies like Coinbase and Kraken, as well as financial platforms like Robinhood, Revolut, and PayPal.
The cryptocurrency landscape has become increasingly competitive, particularly following the bullish sentiment surrounding pro-crypto policies during the Trump administration, which previously saw Bitcoin reach an all-time high of $124,128 in August. However, recent economic uncertainties have led to a nearly 10% drop in Bitcoin’s value since its peak, underscoring the volatility in the crypto market.
Simon McLoughlin, CEO of Uphold, emphasized the unique appeal of easyBitcoin’s rewards system, suggesting it could attract a substantial demographic that has gained awareness of Bitcoin but has yet to engage in the market. The app will offer new users a 1% welcome bonus and a competitive 4.5% annual percentage yield on USD balances.
Haji-Ioannou further articulated his commitment to transforming the cryptocurrency experience, stating, “This isn’t just about technology; it’s about financial empowerment and making Bitcoin a practical investment option for all.” The easyBitcoin app represents both a strategic business move and a potential shift in how the general public interacts with digital currencies.
