Concerns surrounding mass displacement by artificial intelligence (AI) have dominated discussions about the labor market in recent months. However, LPL Financial’s chief economist, Jeffrey Roach, presents a different perspective, suggesting that AI may actually lead to job creation rather than elimination.

Roach referenced the Jevons paradox, which posits that enhanced efficiency from technological advancements can increase rather than diminish demand. As costs decrease, new use cases and broader adoption emerge. “AI may reduce the time and cost required to perform many tasks,” Roach explained. “But that does not necessarily imply a proportional decline in labor demand.” He argues that rather than replacing workers, AI can enhance productivity in various areas, including software development, customer service, research, and operations. This uplift in efficiency can drive organizations to expand their workloads, consequently generating demand for new roles and innovative products.

One practical example highlighted by Roach is the impact of AI on medical diagnostic imaging centers. Instead of leading to job losses, the lower costs associated with AI technologies have spurred an increase in demand for services, resulting in more hiring within these firms.

Moreover, Roach pointed out that AI could help address a pressing challenge in the labor market: the aging population. As many individuals retire, the pool of available workers is expected to shrink. Projections indicate that working-age individuals will make up approximately 62% of the total population by 2050, and this figure may dip below 60% by 2070, according to LPL data. In light of this trend, Roach argues that AI could be seen as a viable solution to bridge the labor gap by enhancing the productivity of existing workers rather than relying solely on an expanded workforce.

In summary, Roach emphasizes that while AI may bring about changes in the nature of work, it is more likely to reallocate tasks rather than displace human workers. By increasing efficiency and creating new opportunities, AI could play a vital role in shaping the future labor market positively.
