After years of anticipation, Ferrari has unveiled its revolutionary electric vehicle, the Luce, during a recent event in Rome. The announcement brings to fruition a project that began back in January 2018 when former Ferrari chairman and CEO Sergio Marchionne first hinted at the possibility of an electric supercar designed to compete with Tesla. “If there is an electric supercar to be built, then Ferrari will be the first,” he proclaimed, showcasing the brand’s ambition to enter the EV market.

The journey to this release has been marked by a strategic drip-feed of information. Initially referred to as the “Elettrica,” the Luce has evolved through stages, receiving both a powertrain reveal last October and an Apple-esque interior design, conceptualized by renowned designers Jony Ive and Marc Newson, revealed earlier this year.

The Luce, aptly named for the Italian word meaning “light,” promises high-performance capabilities that redefine expectations for electric vehicles. Equipped with four motors—one for each wheel—the car boasts a staggering combined output exceeding 1,000 horsepower in its Boost mode. The rear axle alone produces an impressive 832 horsepower, while the front axle contributes an additional 282 horsepower. The vehicle can achieve full power in less than a second, accelerating from zero to 62 mph in just 2.5 seconds and reaching a top speed of 192 mph.

What sets the Luce apart is not just its performance but also its practicality as a five-seat supercar—a first for Ferrari. Central to its capabilities is a monumental 122 kWh battery, one of the largest found in any production EV. It can charge at speeds of up to 350 kW on an 800-volt system, and Ferrari claims the battery provides a range exceeding 329 miles on a single charge.

Additionally, the Luce features all-wheel drive and steering systems that draw inspiration from Ferrari’s Purosangue SUV. Despite the substantial battery’s weight, Ferrari has managed to keep the Luce’s curb weight at approximately 4,982 pounds (or 2,260 kg), only around 200 pounds heavier than the Purosangue.

With the launch of the Luce, Ferrari aims to cement its position in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle market, delivering a blend of luxury, performance, and practicality that fans and critics alike have been eagerly awaiting. As the anticipation transforms into reality, the automotive world watches closely to see how this electric marvel performs on road and track.
