In a recent update, the chief executive of Blue Origin, Dave Limp, has expressed confidence in the company’s future plans following the explosion of its New Glenn rocket just days ago at the LC-36A launch site in Florida. Despite the setback, Limp announced on social media that Blue Origin is committed to launching again before the end of 2026.
Limp reported that a preliminary survey of the launch site had been completed, revealing promising results. The essential components, including the propellant farm, which consists of oxygen, liquid hydrogen, and LNG tanks, are all intact. He emphasized that these elements are crucial due to their long lead times in manufacturing and delivery. Additionally, the water tower at the site suffered no damage.
Blue Origin will proceed with the reconstruction of the LC-36A site, tailored specifically for the 7×2 variant of the New Glenn rocket. There had been considerations to develop a larger pad at LC-36B to accommodate the more powerful 9×4 variant, but Limp clarified that the focus would remain on the existing site.
One significant aspect of the update involved the massive transporter-erector, which was rendered unusable during the explosion. Prior to the incident, Blue Origin had already been exploring alternatives to the transporter-erector, aiming to implement a new vertical concept that would streamline the rocket’s movement from the integration hangar to the launch pad. Limp assured that the company would not seek a new transporter-erector and affirmed, “We will fly again before the end of this year.”
Limp’s statements have addressed critical questions surrounding the company’s direction in light of the recent failure. The plan to rapidly rebuild the launch site and relaunch with the established 7×2 variant indicates a strategic push to regain momentum. This timeline of approximately six months may also serve to temper speculation about potential partnerships with competitor SpaceX for future missions, particularly regarding the Blue Moon lander project.
As Blue Origin charts its path forward, industry observers will be keenly watching the company’s progress toward its ambitious launch goals.
