The latest developments in the AI sector signal a major shift as leading firms OpenAI and Anthropic enter the IPO race. OpenAI’s recent confidential S-1 filing follows closely behind Anthropic’s similar move, marking a significant transition for both companies from private experiments to public accountability, complete with financial disclosures and regulations that accompany a public listing.

As these tech giants prepare for this new chapter, the immediate focus is on SpaceX, which is set to go public later this week. Led by Elon Musk’s xAI, SpaceX has a first-mover advantage in this emerging landscape. OpenAI has remarked that while they are looking toward an IPO, the timeline remains uncertain, stating, “it may be a while” before shares are publicly traded.

Experts suggest these IPOs could be indicative of the financial instability many AI firms are facing. Some analysts speculate that public listings might also serve as a way to reward employees and retain top talent in a fiercely competitive market.

Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity, noted that his firm is still targeting an IPO in 2028, stating that the trajectory of OpenAI and Anthropic will significantly impact the broader industry. He emphasized that poor performance in their IPOs could have negative “ripple effects” across the sector.

Dan Ives, a tech analyst at Wedbush Securities, pointed out that OpenAI’s filing symbolizes an opening of “the floodgates for the IPO market.” He observed that both OpenAI and Anthropic are racing to go public to outpace one another in securing substantial capital. Ives highlighted the competitive pressure on OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman to sustain impressive growth amid emerging rivals like Anthropic.

Differentiating between players in the AI space, Dan Niles, manager at Niles Investment Management, expressed a favorable view of Anthropic over OpenAI, suggesting that Anthropic has gained momentum and may even be turning a profit. He remarked on the rapid growth of Anthropic’s revenue and characterized OpenAI as being caught between stronger competitors.

Michael Fertik, founder of Verdict Capital, showed enthusiasm for SpaceX’s IPO, hoping it would usher in “a gushing torrent of liquidity” within the market. He emphasized that strong performances from these IPOs could bolster the U.S. position in the generative AI race and open opportunities for retail investors.

Gregory Allen, founder and CEO of Decision Tree Research, described the valuations of OpenAI, SpaceX, and Anthropic as extraordinary and likened them to annuities promising substantial long-term returns. However, he cautioned that despite favorable gross margins, companies like OpenAI are at risk of financial instability if they mismanage their capital investments.

Amid these discussions, Gary Marcus, an AI researcher critical of the industry, pointed out a cautious stance toward the inflated valuations of these companies, suggesting that potential investors should critically assess the industry landscape before jumping in.

Furthermore, Nate Elliott, a principal analyst at EMARKETER, remarked that OpenAI is attempting to go public during a precarious time, as it faces increased competition in both consumer and enterprise AI sectors. He forecasted that Google is likely to overtake ChatGPT in user engagement by early 2027, underscoring that OpenAI may encounter challenges in meeting the significant capital requirements for sustaining its operations.

Joshua Achiam, OpenAI’s chief futurist, framed the rivalry with Anthropic as a fundamental choice about the direction AI should take—whether to entrust humanity’s progress to technology or to opt for a more cautionary approach. His statements highlight the broader ideological divide underpinning the competition within the AI landscape.

These developments signal a crucial phase for the AI industry, where major firms transition to public markets amidst competitive pressures and evolving technological landscapes. The outcomes of these IPOs could have far-reaching implications not just for the companies themselves, but for the entire business ecosystem surrounding artificial intelligence.
