Aspen Snowmass and X Games have solidified their ongoing partnership with the announcement that the MoonPay X Games League will be hosted at Buttermilk through the winter season of 2028-29. This three-year agreement represents a significant milestone in a collaboration that has become a cornerstone of action sports since 2002.
John Rigney, Chief Business Development Officer at Aspen One, expressed pride in this longstanding relationship, emphasizing the importance of Aspen as a venue for high-level competition in freeskiing and snowboarding. “We’ve proudly partnered with X Games for more than 25 years because we love their commitment to showcasing the energy and vibrancy of our sports on a global scale,” he stated.
X Games Aspen has transformed into more than just a competition over the years. It has established itself as a gathering spot for athletes and fans, becoming integral to local culture, and celebrating the spirit of winter sports. The upcoming season introduces a fresh format: the X Games League will feature regionally based teams of drafted athletes competing for points, culminating in a season championship. This inaugural Winter season is set to launch in January 2027.
Jeremy Bloom, CEO of X Games, described Aspen as the league’s “crown jewel,” highlighting its significance on the global stage for athletes and fans alike. Snowboarder Mark McMorris, a founder athlete of the XGL Winter, lauded the unique atmosphere, noting the unmatched fan energy throughout his 15 years of competition at Aspen.
The agreement reflects both organizations’ commitment to the expansion and relevance of action sports while affirming Aspen Snowmass as a premier venue for defining moments in snowsport history. Details regarding event dates for X Games Aspen 2027 will be announced soon.
The X Games League will kick off with its inaugural Winter Draft on September 16, 2026, at Cosm Los Angeles. During this event, the top skiers and snowboarders will be selected by four regionally based X Games clubs to compete in the league’s first winter season. The draft, which will be streamed on multiple platforms, promises to be a landmark moment for participating athletes.
In September 2025, X Games plans a full rebrand, including a new logo and identity aimed at ushering in the next era of action sports. This transformation is a part of a broader vision to define the next three decades of the sport, with the X Games League being a cornerstone of this initiative.
The success of X Games Aspen is attributed to the support of the wider Aspen Snowmass community, which includes local organizations and partners dedicated to enhancing this significant event year after year. SnowBrains will continue to cover the excitement live from the Aspen X Games in 2027, ensuring that fans remain connected to this iconic winter sports celebration.
