The recent debut of SpaceX on public markets marks a significant milestone that could ignite a new wave of stock market gains, reminiscent of historic IPOs like Netscape Navigator’s in 1995. As noted by Evercore ISI strategist Julian Emanuel, Netscape’s IPO was not only a product of the burgeoning internet era but also a catalyst that inspired investors to explore new technological opportunities. This sentiment echoes today as artificial intelligence becomes a dominant theme in corporate America, paving the way for the emergence of new companies.
Emanuel highlighted that following Netscape’s launch, an era of heightened productivity and wealth creation unfolded. Drawing parallels to the present, he pointed out that the current momentum driven by AI, particularly since a pivotal low in March, mirrors that historic time. He indicated that SpaceX’s record-breaking IPO could accelerate a capital market cycle, potentially leading to the next significant phase of a bull market. Landmark IPOs have historically provided investors with avenues to capitalize on emerging themes, and with enthusiasm for such offerings persisting, the market could see higher, albeit below-average, returns as the cycle matures.
On June 11, SpaceX priced its stock at $135, offering 555.6 million shares and valuing the company at $1.78 trillion. The stock officially debuted on the Nasdaq the next day, opening at approximately $150 per share. Driven by robust demand from both institutional and retail investors, the stock price climbed throughout its first day of trading, closing at $160.95—a 19.2% increase from its initial offering price. This surge boosted SpaceX’s market capitalization to an astounding $2.1 trillion.
As investors look to the future, two more notable IPOs are on the horizon: OpenAI and Anthropic. Both companies recently submitted confidential IPO filings to the SEC, reflecting their readiness to enter the public market. Following aggressive fundraising in early 2026, Anthropic holds a substantial private valuation of $965 billion, slightly edging out OpenAI, which is valued at $852 billion.
Emanuel provided several charts to illustrate the potential bullish signals emanating from SpaceX’s strong market performance. Historical data supports the notion that landmark IPOs can lay the groundwork for subsequent market gains.
However, it’s crucial to acknowledge that various factors will influence the stock market as the year progresses, including the actions of new Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh regarding inflation and geopolitical tensions, such as U.S. military engagements in Iran. Nevertheless, the strong market entry of SpaceX suggests a favorable outlook for the market, particularly if other key conditions align positively as the year draws to a close.
