Claude Guillemot, a pivotal figure in the video game industry and co-founder of Ubisoft, tragically lost his life in a plane crash in France on Friday at the age of 69. The announcement of his death was made by a spokesperson for Ubisoft, a notable publisher recognized for blockbuster franchises such as Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry. In their statement, the company expressed deep sadness over Guillemot’s passing and extended heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones during this incredibly challenging time.
Details regarding the accident remain scarce, but reports indicate that a Cessna 421, a twin-engine propeller plane, crashed shortly before 6 p.m. in La Baule—a popular seaside resort in western France. Eyewitnesses noted that the aircraft was nearing the town’s airport when it appeared to “bank and crash.” Both individuals aboard the plane perished, although the identity of the second passenger has not yet been disclosed.
Guillemot, alongside his four brothers, founded Ubisoft Entertainment in 1986. The company initially thrived with releases like Zombi, and soon established itself as a leader in the gaming market with beloved titles such as Rayman. The launch of Assassin’s Creed in 2007 marked a significant turning point for Ubisoft, with the series amassing over 200 million players globally. The latest installment, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, transports players to 16th-century Japan, where they embark on a quest to thwart various sinister forces.
A recent review from The New York Times highlighted the game’s “stunningly realized depiction” of Japan, praising its depth and narrative engagement. However, the game has faced some backlash online, particularly for its inclusion of a Black samurai named Yasuke, which sparked discussions about representation and content in gaming. Prominent figures, including tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, have criticized the game’s approach, suggesting that ongoing diversity efforts undermine artistic integrity. Ubisoft responded by emphasizing that its stories are based on fictional narratives, despite Yasuke being rooted in historical reality.
In addition to its gaming ventures, Ubisoft is developing adaptations for film and television based on its acclaimed Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry series. The Guillemot Corporation, distinct from Ubisoft, focuses on manufacturing gaming accessories and audio equipment, highlighting the family’s lasting influence in the gaming industry.
