Anthropic is set to launch its latest AI feature, Claude Tag, designed to enhance collaboration within Slack workspaces. Currently in research preview, Claude Tag acts as an “always-on Claude,” serving as a virtual AI teammate that can be interacted with directly in chat environments. The feature will enter beta testing, exclusively available to Claude Enterprise and Claude Team users.
Claude Tag is an advancement from existing capabilities, where users could already direct message @Claude or tag it in conversations for immediate assistance. Additionally, the Claude Code integration allows for seamless handling of coding tasks, transforming mentions in Slack channels into comprehensive coding sessions on the web and delivering updates directly back into the original chat thread.
The key improvement with Claude Tag is its ability to maintain persistent context and memory, a necessary enhancement for effective collaboration. According to Anthropic, “As Claude follows along with its channel, it learns ever more about the work.” It can also aggregate information from other areas within the organization, provided it has permission to access those channels.
One notable feature of Claude Tag is the single Claude identity accessible to all members of a Slack channel. This setup ensures that everyone can view ongoing interactions with Claude, allowing for a seamless transition in conversations as team members come and go. System administrators play a vital role in maintaining control over Claude’s interactions by determining which tools and channels it can access. For instance, a Claude set up for legal tasks will not interfere with discussions in engineering channels.
When given a specific assignment, Claude Tag breaks down the task into manageable stages and works through them using its available resources. It communicates progress in a dedicated Slack thread, providing updates along the way. In addition to reactive support, Claude Tag also features an ambient mode that proactively participates in discussions, offering updates, drawing attention to important information, and following up on neglected tasks.
This new level of interaction aims to create a work atmosphere that resembles collaboration with a real colleague — one that has access to a much broader understanding and context than previous iterations.
The emphasis on context is becoming increasingly crucial in enterprise solutions, and Anthropic is not alone in its focus on this aspect. Companies like Microsoft are similarly enhancing contextual awareness through platforms like Graph, utilizing tools such as Copilot and Work IQ. Other organizations, including Snowflake and Databricks, are creating backend systems that help agents utilize existing organizational knowledge efficiently. Meanwhile, Glean is in the process of developing a layer of intelligence that comprehends company context and acts as a bridge between AI models and enterprise data.
This ongoing evolution in workplace AI continues to highlight the growing significance of context and memory in enhancing productivity and efficiency in organizational settings.
