Morgan County commissioners have decided to implement a one-year moratorium on a proposed bitcoin mining data center in Somerville, following significant pushback from local residents. The project, initiated by VoltCore, faced opposition primarily from those living in close proximity to the proposed site on Union Road.

In recent weeks, over 450 residents signed petitions expressing their concerns about the potential impacts of the data center. Key issues raised included worries about noise pollution, environmental degradation, and the overall effect the project could have on the community’s quality of life.

County Commission Chairman Ray Long emphasized that these resident concerns influenced the decision to pause the project. “Today we passed this resolution putting a pause button so we can go back and study and get more details about how it really affects the environment and the noise,” Long commented. He acknowledged that the concerns voiced during the commission meeting were valid and warranted careful consideration.

The moratorium aims to provide the county with the necessary time to thoroughly investigate the implications of the bitcoin mining facility. Residents expressed their relief and satisfaction with the commissioners’ decision during the meeting. Somerville resident Lyndsey Hutson, who spoke personally about the issue, characterized the outcome as a positive move. “I think it was a great step to help us,” she remarked, explaining how the peacefulness of her property is of utmost importance to her.

Hutson shared the emotional weight of her circumstances, noting, “I lost my son six months ago to brain cancer, so this is a very close thing to my heart. I need my peace, and we’re all out there for a reason.” The community’s response suggests a concerted effort to preserve the quality of life in Somerville while evaluating the long-term consequences of such technological developments.

This decision marks a significant moment for Morgan County as commissioners aim to balance innovation with the welfare of their residents.
