The investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie, has taken a disturbing turn with the receipt of a new ransom note. TMZ has reported that they received an email from an anonymous tipster claiming to have information about those responsible for Guthrie’s abduction. This email, along with previous correspondence from the same individual, has been forwarded to the FBI for further investigation.

This latest ultimatum, received early Friday morning, comes after the tipster has allegedly sent nearly a dozen communications since the case began. The sender claims to possess a short video of Guthrie alongside the primary kidnapper. This footage is purportedly stored in a safe deposit box, and to validate their claim, the sender included a private Bitcoin wallet address, which reportedly has never been publicly disclosed. The individual is demanding one Bitcoin, valued at approximately $60,000, in exchange for revealing the location of the mobile device containing the footage, as well as the identities and addresses of the kidnappers.

The FBI has been working diligently on this case, employing digital forensics teams to trace the emails. At one point, multiple agents and TMZ’s IT department were engaged in a joint effort to track the digital footprints left by the sender.

Additionally, further revelations from a second ransom note sent to a Tucson television station shed light on a shift in the kidnappers’ demands. They reportedly lowered their original ransom request of $4 million to $6 million, asserting in the note that Guthrie had died and stating, “We didn’t do it.” Investigators suspect that Guthrie may have died due to medical complications while in captivity, possibly due to a lack of necessary medication.

The authenticity of the tipster’s claims, including the existence of the video evidence, remains unconfirmed. Both investigators and the FBI have expressed concerns that the individual might be attempting to defraud them. TMZ founder Harvey Levin has spoken about the challenges of communicating with the anonymous source. He urged the sender to prove the legitimacy of their claims by providing a screenshot from the alleged video, only to be met with resistance. The sender expressed fears that sharing such evidence would expose their identity and put them at risk from the kidnappers.

The FBI has advised TMZ not to pay the ransom, emphasizing they are making progress on the case. Investigators remain focused on tracking the kidnappers and the tipster’s unpublicized Bitcoin operations. Levin noted the chilling possibility that the kidnappers may have experienced panic upon realizing Guthrie’s medical condition may have contributed to her death, leading them to go silent.

In a hopeful statement, an FBI official indicated that the case could eventually be solved through a lapse in operational security. They believe it is only a matter of time before someone involved might inadvertently reveal critical information.

As the investigation continues, the shifting dynamics of the case now classify it as a felony murder investigation, prompting federal agents to intensify their efforts to uncover the truth behind Nancy Guthrie’s tragic disappearance.
