At PAX West, the conversation with David Brevik, co-founder of Skystone Games and a legendary figure in the gaming industry, provided valuable insights into his journey, the challenges of modern game publishing, and the shifting landscape of game development. Brevik, best known for his influential role in creating the Diablo series, shared his thoughts on various topics ranging from the role of AI in game development to the nuances of indie publishing.

Brevik’s latest venture, Skystone Games, was founded in 2020 amidst the global disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic. Transitioning from a focus on first-party game development to indie publishing, Skystone was established with a philosophy centered around identifying and supporting fun and innovative games from solid developers. Reflecting on his company’s mission, Brevik said, “Our philosophy at first was, let’s just try and find fun games and good, solid developers.” This ethos has led Skystone to prioritize games featuring rich mechanics and high replayability.

What sets Skystone apart is not merely its funding capabilities; it embodies Brevik’s commitment to mentorship and hands-on development support. “As much as they want, really. I’m not making the game—it’s their game, and I don’t want to take over. But I’m here to help,” he explained, emphasizing his role as a resource for emerging developers. Brevik’s extensive experience in the industry allows him to provide valuable insights, from technical advice to playtesting.

In addition to his work with Skystone, Brevik has been actively involved in consulting, notably with the Torchlight Infinite project. His approach involves offering feedback and advice while allowing developers the autonomy to implement changes as they see fit. He reflected positively on the experience, stating that some of his suggestions influenced the final game design.

Brevik also addressed the turbulent state of the gaming industry, citing ongoing layoffs and studio closures as part of a broader cycle influenced by rapid technological advancement and economic pressures. He described the current industry landscape as both a correction and a new normal, expressing optimism for a future rebound.

With the increasing presence of artificial intelligence in game development, Brevik acknowledged its inevitability but expressed concern over its implications. “I dislike the fact that it uses stuff that people have created to learn from and create new things…,” he lamented, highlighting ethical worries around credit and ownership for original creators. Despite the challenges posed by AI, he recognizes its potential role in shaping the future of gaming.

On monetization strategies, Brevik defended the evolution of models such as free-to-play and battle passes in light of rising game development costs. He characterized these shifts not as exploitative but as necessary adaptations, given that consumers have not significantly increased their willingness to pay for games.

When discussing the previous hype surrounding Web3 and NFTs, Brevik commented that interest in these technologies has dwindled, expressing skepticism about their practical application in gaming. His expertise in technical matters did not shield him from the confusion surrounding NFTs, demonstrating a general sense of disillusionment with that trend.

Brevik’s reflections on Diablo were perhaps the most poignant, revealing his deep connection to the franchise. Despite the evolution of the series beyond his involvement, he articulated a sense of bittersweet nostalgia for the game that launched his career. Even though he has not returned to the franchise, he remains proud of his contributions and the legacy of the game.

As an advocate for aspiring indie developers, Brevik offered practical advice for those seeking a publisher. “Find the right publisher, one you trust, who prioritizes your product. Believe in what you’re doing. Do your best. Don’t give up,” he encouraged, underscoring the importance of resilience in an often unforgiving industry.

Looking ahead, Brevik expressed his vision for Skystone Games, aiming to publish a diverse array of titles across various platforms. His journey, from crafting the roots of an iconic franchise to nurturing new talent in the indie scene, showcases his enduring passion for gaming and mentorship. As the industry continues to evolve, Brevik’s insights provide a roadmap for navigating both its challenges and opportunities.
