Al Roker Reveals His Secrets to Maintaining 100-Pound Weight Loss for Over 20 Years

Al Roker, the well-known TODAY weatherman and co-host of the 3rd Hour of TODAY, is sharing insights into his remarkable journey of maintaining a 100-pound weight loss for over 20 years. Featured on the cover of June’s People’s Spring Health issue, Roker opened up about his daily diet and exercise routine, emphasizing a philosophy of moderation rather than deprivation.

As the Chief Motivation Officer of the Start TODAY wellness app, Roker encourages others to embrace a balanced approach to health. In his candid interview, he noted that he still enjoys his favorite meals, including steak, creamed spinach, baked potatoes, and even apple crisp topped with vanilla ice cream. “Moderation rather than deprivation is better in the long run,” he remarked.

Roker applies this same philosophy to his exercise regimen. He favors a practical approach, focusing on consistency over intensity. His mantra, “Something is better than nothing,” reflects his belief that even small efforts can lead to significant benefits. This mindset has proven crucial for Roker, who has had to navigate serious health challenges, including a prostate cancer diagnosis in 2020 and hospitalization for blood clots in 2022. His doctors attribute his resilience in part to his commitment to fitness.

To maintain his health and weight loss, Roker practices four daily habits:

  1. Weight Training: He starts each day with a 10-minute weight training routine from the Start TODAY app. This practice is not about bulking up but is designed to strengthen bones and enhance flexibility as he ages. Roker emphasized the importance of being fit enough to carry his 2-year-old granddaughter down the stairs in the years to come.

  2. Steps Goal: Following his weight training, Roker walks on a treadmill for 20 minutes. He aims for a daily goal of 10,000 steps, which he finds achievable and motivating. On pleasant days, he prefers to take longer walks in Central Park.

  3. Walking Snacks: Roker incorporates what he calls “walking snacks” into his day by taking short walks throughout his work routine at 30 Rockefeller Center. He uses walking desks to fit these activities into his schedule, finding them a natural way to break up his day.

  4. Consistent Breakfast: To start his day right, Roker has a set breakfast that includes yogurt, granola, and often a banana. He prepares healthy meals in advance, ensuring that convenience does not compromise quality. For dinner, he enjoys cooking meals that are nourishing and flavorful, often opting for roasted vegetables and lean proteins.

Roker’s ability to adapt and embrace a health-conscious lifestyle highlights his enduring commitment to wellness, inspiring many fans to prioritize their own health and well-being.
