The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater kicked off its highly anticipated 2025-26 season with a vibrant Opening Night Gala on December 3, marking not just the start of a new season but a significant chapter under the artistic leadership of Alicia Graf Mack. This gala, characterized by a stirring performance and lively festivities, has set the stage for Ailey’s next era, deeply rooted in the legacy of the late Alvin Ailey.
Alicia Graf Mack, a celebrated dancer and educator, shared her excitement with PEOPLE, reflecting on the profound influence of Judith Jamison, the Artistic Director Emerita who passed away in November 2024. Graf Mack described Jamison as her “North Star,” emphasizing the integral role she played in shaping her artistic vision and leadership style. “How lucky I am to have learned directly from her leadership and to walk the path she created, one defined by integrity, grace, and an unwavering pursuit of excellence,” Graf Mack noted.
As she addressed the gala attendees, Graf Mack highlighted the significance of the evening, stating, “Tonight marks more than an opening night. It is a continuation of a dream that began 67 years ago in the heart and mind of one visionary man: Alvin Ailey.” She expressed her commitment to sharing authentic identities and diverse movement languages that resonate with the audience on a deeper level.
The night’s performances featured captivating pieces including “Blink of An Eye,” “A Case of You,” “Grace,” and the iconic “Revelations.” In addition, the gala honored Daria L. Wallach, chair of the AILEY Board of Trustees, for her exemplary leadership and dedication to the organization’s mission and legacy.
Among the notable guests were Colman Domingo, who served as Honorary Chair, and singer Ciara, who attended as Honored Guest to introduce the powerful finale of “Revelations,” accompanied by a moving choir performance.
Alvin Ailey, who is credited with revolutionizing modern dance and elevating the presence of African Americans in the art form during the 20th century, was also celebrated during the event. He received posthumous recognition as an honoree in the inaugural Dance Hall of Fame ceremony, which took place that evening at Los Angeles’ Glorya Kaufman Performing Arts Center. Other luminaries such as Mikhail Baryshnikov, Misty Copeland, and Martha Graham were also honored.
Ailey’s lasting contributions to dance endure, having formed the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 1958, inspired by his mentor Lester Horton. His signature work, “Revelations,” remains a cornerstone of the company’s repertoire, symbolizing the rich tapestry of African American culture and experience. Ailey’s legacy continues to inspire new generations of dancers and audiences alike, ensuring that his vision and artistry remain a vibrant part of the dance community.
