American Airlines has announced the appointment of Nathaniel Pieper as its new Chief Commercial Officer, effective November 3. Pieper, who most recently served as CEO of oneworld since April 2024, will report directly to CEO Robert Isom.
This leadership change follows the recent departure of Vasu Raja, the airline’s former chief commercial officer, who left after his strategy for business travel faced significant pushback from corporate travel agencies. Pieper steps into the role as American Airlines navigates critical challenges in the post-pandemic travel landscape.
With nearly 30 years of experience in the aviation industry, Pieper has a robust background in commercial and finance leadership. Prior to his tenure with oneworld, he spent over 25 years in various senior roles at major airlines, including Alaska Air Group, Delta Air Lines, and Northwest Airlines. During his time at Alaska Air Group, Pieper played a pivotal role in the airline’s integration into the oneworld alliance and established a significant commercial partnership with American Airlines, enhancing both domestic and international service offerings.
In conjunction with the announcement of Pieper’s appointment, American Airlines reported its third-quarter financial results, revealing a revenue of $13.69 billion, surpassing Wall Street’s expectations of $13.63 billion. The airline reported an adjusted loss per share of $0.17, better than analysts’ predictions of a $0.28 loss. Looking ahead, the company has raised its full-year adjusted earnings per share forecast to a range between $0.65 and $0.95, compared to the previous projection that included potential losses.
Following the financial report and announcement of Pieper’s appointment, American Airlines’ shares rose nearly 4% in early trading, reflecting a positive outlook among investors.
