An arctic blast has gripped the Chicago area, bringing with it dangerous sub-zero wind chills and plunging temperatures. The meteorological community has issued an AccuWeather Alert for the weekend, with the National Weather Service (NWS) designating a Cold Weather Advisory affecting numerous counties, including Boone, Cook, DuPage, and Kane. This advisory will be in effect from 8 p.m. Saturday to noon Sunday, with special attention also given to Waukesha County in Wisconsin.
The NWS has highlighted the potential for slippery road conditions due to frigid temperatures interfering with snow removal efforts. Additionally, gusting winds, reaching up to 25 mph, are likely to cause drifting snow back onto roadways. Citizens are warned that frostbite can occur within minutes without proper attire. To combat the cold, the city of Aurora is operating a warming center overnight, offering meals and cots for those in need.
On Saturday, light snow was observed in many parts of the region, tapering off by mid-afternoon. The most significant accumulation is expected to fall south of Interstate 80, where a few inches could blanket the ground. High temperatures hovered in the lower teens, with wind chills making it feel like -10 to -20 throughout the day. Sunday morning, particularly before the Chicago Bears game at Soldier Field, is anticipated to be the coldest stretch of the weekend.
In light of these pitiless conditions, local resident Dominique McKenzie has mobilized efforts to assist those less fortunate. With her nonprofit organization, Poor Connections, she has dedicated herself to supporting those in need by distributing hand warmers, gloves, blankets, and other essentials. McKenzie emphasizes the ongoing struggle for many people in the city: “There are people who are just really trying and don’t have the resources that we have,” she expressed, motivated by her own experiences and the recent loss of her brother.
McKenzie, who has gathered donations from local businesses and her community, remains committed to her mission. She invites others to contribute to her cause, providing a drop-off location for those interested in helping out during this critical time.
Despite the current harsh weather conditions, there is hope for relief. A warming trend is expected to sweep through the area next week, with temperatures predicted to rise into the 40s by Wednesday.
