LONDON — Mikel Arteta has expressed concern over Arsenal’s recurring defensive issues following a tense encounter against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Emirates Stadium. Despite securing a narrow 2-1 victory that elevated them five points clear at the top of the Premier League table, the Gunners’ failure to maintain control of the game nearly cost them dearly against the league’s struggling side.
The match took a pivotal turn in the 70th minute when Wolves’ goalkeeper Sam Johnstone inadvertently redirected a corner from Bukayo Saka into his own net, giving Arsenal the lead. However, the home side’s apparent decision to retreat defensively allowed Wolves to capitalize, leading to a late equalizer from substitute Tolu Arokodare in the 90th minute.
In a dramatic finish, Arsenal regained their advantage when Yerson Mosquera inadvertently turned another Saka cross into his own net in the dying moments of the match. While the victory was crucial, Arteta lamented the dangerous patterns displayed by his team, particularly in the final minutes when they ceded territory and possession.
“There’s relief in the dressing room, but we need to recognize that the margins of our performance should have been much greater,” Arteta stated during his post-match interview. “In the first half, we weren’t precise enough despite generating numerous opportunities. In the second half, we created more chances but then went through a spell of being deep and passive, showcasing some horrible defensive habits that are simply unacceptable for a team facing a side that hasn’t managed a single shot.”
Arteta’s comments reflect a broader concern about his team’s ability to maintain composure and discipline, especially when leading. The match illustrated how quickly a dominant position can unravel in the competitive Premier League, where even teams at the bottom can seize opportunities if opponents become complacent.
Adding to Arsenal’s troubles, defender Ben White left the pitch in the 31st minute due to a hamstring injury, which could sideline him for an extended period. Arteta noted that White had just started to regain his rhythm after overcoming previous injury issues but now faces another setback.
“He hasn’t played many minutes due to earlier knee issues, and we were forced to push him into the lineup when we lacked alternatives,” Arteta explained. “It’s unfortunate because we’re now looking at another significant injury issue.”
As Arsenal looks to build on their position at the top of the table, both Arteta and the players must address the defensive frailties that nearly undermined their efforts against Wolves. The team’s ability to tighten its backline will be crucial as they navigate the rest of the season.
