During the recent 2025 Game Awards, Bandai Namco Entertainment unveiled the highly anticipated next installment in its iconic flight-shooter series, “Ace Combat.” The new title, “Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve,” is set to continue the narrative established in “Ace Combat 7” and take place before the events of “Ace Combat 3.” Players can look forward to its release in 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC via Steam.
Before the announcement, Bandai Namco Entertainment CEO Nao Udagawa shared insights about the game’s development with media outlets. Udagawa highlighted a significant focus on enhancing visual fidelity, particularly in the rendering of the skies and clouds. The graphical improvements aim to create a more immersive environment, effectively portraying weather changes and enhancing the game’s aesthetic appeal. “With each development update, I found myself amazed by the sky and clouds,” Udagawa stated, signaling a commitment to elevating the visual experience.
The game’s premise casts players as a fighter pilot stranded on a rescue boat, awaiting salvation from the aging aircraft carrier, Endurance. Set in July 2029, the storyline dives into a turbulent backdrop where the Federation of Central Usea (FCU) faces an alarming invasion from the Republic of Sotoa. As the FCU military crumbles and hopes are diminished, players adopt the name “Wings of Theve.” This moniker, once a symbol of valor and hope, is reveled to be a fabricated narrative meant to rally spirits. With the help of three new comrades, players are tasked with reclaiming their homeland amidst the chaos.
To further enhance the “Ace Combat” experience, Bandai Namco has established a new studio, Bandai Namco Aces. This initiative allows the dedicated “Ace Combat” team to focus solely on their beloved franchise, promising refined development cycles. Udagawa elaborated on the strategic direction by stressing the importance of translating discussions and development faster while maintaining high-quality standards.
In addition to “Ace Combat 8,” Bandai Namco Entertainment has been making strides in other areas, including a film adaptation of the popular “Elden Ring” game. A collaboration with A24 and director Alex Garland previously announced has seen new developments, with Hollywood executive Peter Rice joining the project. Udagawa noted that pre-production is progressing steadily, emphasizing a commitment to ensuring that both long-time fans and newcomers can appreciate the film.
As the anticipation builds for both “Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve” and the “Elden Ring” film, Bandai Namco remains focused on delivering exceptional experiences that resonate with fans of their franchises.
