In a recent news conference, Bella Mir opened up about her journey as a fighter in the lead-up to her match at UFC BJJ 4. The daughter of mixed martial arts heavyweight champion Frank Mir discussed the unique pressures and challenges that come with being the child of a prominent athlete, drawing parallels with basketball player Bronny James, son of NBA legend LeBron James.
Mir emphasized that while many children of professional athletes face the expectation to follow in their parents’ footsteps, her focus is on carving her own path. “There’s always that question like, ‘Oh, are they going to follow in their parents’ footsteps?'” she remarked. “Now, I’m just proving to myself that I can be on this level.” Mir believes that her determination and drive to succeed independently set her apart from many other athlete offspring.
While Bronny James currently competes alongside his father for the Los Angeles Lakers, Bella Mir’s trajectory is different; she has yet to break into the UFC but is actively honing her skills across multiple disciplines, including jiu-jitsu, MMA, and wrestling. “I think it’s whatever Dad says,” she shared when discussing her potential next steps in MMA. She trusts her father’s guidance in determining the right time for her to transition into the big leagues.
Mir represents a distinctive cohort of female collegiate wrestlers making their mark in MMA, and she believes that the fear of the sport’s brutal nature deters many of her peers from making the jump. “I definitely think watching Petr Yan and Merab just fight, and how bloody that got, I think people are scared of that aspect of MMA,” she explained, pointing out that alternatives like jiu-jitsu are becoming increasingly popular among athletes. With the sport of jiu-jitsu rapidly expanding, Mir noted, some wrestlers may choose to pursue success in that area instead of facing the hardships of MMA.
She shared her hope that with time, more female wrestlers will join the MMA ranks, despite the common apprehension about getting struck. “For the girls, it’s like weird about getting punched in the face. They’re like, ‘No, my nails,'” she noted. Nevertheless, her commitment to the sport remains steadfast, as she actively encourages her teammates to train with her and consider a transition into mixed martial arts. Mir’s determination to carve out her own legacy continues to drive her, as she prepares for the challenges ahead.
