For years, Billy Gardell, well-known for his role in “Mike & Molly,” battled with his weight, often promising himself that he would make a change soon. After numerous attempts to lose weight—often starting on a preferential day like Mondays or the first of the month—Gardell faced increasingly dire health issues. By 2020, he weighed around 370-380 pounds and had developed type 2 diabetes. The onset of COVID-19 heightened his concerns, as he found himself facing a myriad of health risks, including obesity and respiratory issues.
Reflecting on this precarious situation, Gardell recognized that these factors created a “perfect storm” surrounding his health. Faced with alarming blood pressure and worsening diabetes, he finally resolved to take action. “Come hell or high water, I’ve got to make a change,” he recalled.
This pivotal moment led Gardell to undergo bariatric surgery on July 17, 2021. The operation marked the beginning of a transformative journey that profoundly shifted his relationship with food. “Food is fuel. It’s not reward, it’s not soothing, it’s not medication,” Gardell explained, emphasizing the need to move past emotional eating habits.
Since his surgery, Gardell has lost more than 170 pounds, prompting him to feel healthier than ever. His diabetes has disappeared, and he now maintains a weight between 210 and 215 pounds, which he describes as comfortable. “Losing weight saved my life,” he asserts, noting that he feels strong and full of energy.
Gardell’s background sheds light on his long-standing struggles with weight. Growing up in a split household between Pennsylvania and Florida, he faced significant responsibilities at a young age, which complicated his relationship with food. As a teenager, he began using food as a coping mechanism to manage emotional stress, celebrating successes and masking fears with indulgent meals.
His weight gain did not hinder his career in comedy; he found success through his performances in small venues, eventually landing the role in “Mike & Molly.” The show’s premise—centered around a couple meeting at an Overeaters Anonymous meeting—allowed Gardell to portray a romantic lead at a weight of 350 pounds, an experience he calls surreal.
However, as Gardell’s health deteriorated, he was prompted to consider weight-loss surgery multiple times but hesitated until COVID-19 brought his health risks to the forefront. Now, he praises his surgical team and nutritionist for their support, acknowledging the importance of a change in mindset in sustaining his weight-loss journey. Regular sessions with a nutritionist helped him revisit his emotional connection to food, reinforcing his worthiness of good health.
To maintain his weight loss and overall health, Gardell has instituted a strict routine, including a balanced diet and significant hydration. He exercises regularly and allows himself the occasional indulgence without excessive guilt. “You’re never going to do it perfectly, but if you’re doing it eight out of 10 times, you’re going to win the battle,” he shared.
As a result of his transformation, Gardell has experienced rewarding new activities, such as surfing and horseback riding, and cherishes the joy of fitting into clothes off-the-rack. Furthermore, his journey has strengthened his relationship with his wife, Patty, and son, Will, who provided unwavering support throughout his transformation. “When a man knows what he’s fighting for, he’s capable of doing some amazing things,” he said, reiterating how his family has been his motivation to reclaim his health.
