Bitcoin and U.S. stock futures experienced a notable surge on Tuesday evening, with oil prices plummeting sharply following President Donald Trump’s announcement of a two-week ceasefire between Iran and the U.S. Through his platform, Truth Social, Trump confirmed a suspension of a planned extensive bombing campaign against Iran, marking a significant moment in U.S.-Iran relations.

The leading cryptocurrency, Bitcoin (BTC), saw an impressive gain, reaching a high of $72,699, up 5% within a 24-hour period, according to CoinDesk data. This positive movement was mirrored in the broader cryptocurrency market, with the CoinDesk 20 Index advancing 5% to 2,034 points. In the traditional stock market, futures linked to the S&P 500 rose by 1.9%, while those for the tech-heavy Nasdaq increased by 2.2%. Furthermore, Dow Jones futures saw a jump of approximately 1.8%.

Conversely, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil prices fell more than 10%, dipping to $95 per barrel, reflecting a similar decline in Brent oil prices. The market reacted optimistically to the news of the ceasefire, which appears to ease some of the tensions that had been gripping global oil markets.

In his post, Trump articulated his reasoning for the ceasefire, stating, “This will be a double sided CEASEFIRE! The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East.”

Iran quickly confirmed its commitment to the ceasefire, declaring that “if attacks against Iran are halted, our Powerful Armed Forces will cease their defensive operations.” The Iranian government also mentioned that oil tankers could safely navigate the Strait of Hormuz for the duration of the ceasefire, contingent on coordination with Iran’s armed forces and in consideration of technical limitations.

However, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz has been described as complicated. Javier Bias, a Bloomberg opinion columnist focusing on energy and commodities, pointed out that while the ceasefire would allow for increased oil flows, it also came with warnings about “technical limitations” and the need for “coordination” with the Iranian military. Still, the prospect of renewed oil and LNG transportation is seen as a stabilizing factor for the energy market.

For over a month, risk assets had remained under pressure due to the uncertainties surrounding the conflict with Iran. While Bitcoin had fluctuated within a limited range, the overall market sentiment was weighed down by rising oil prices and inflation concerns, leading traders to adopt bearish positions in the futures market.

The recent price uptick has prompted exchanges to liquidate nearly $600 million in leveraged crypto futures positions. Of that amount, over $400 million came from traders holding bearish short bets. This trend suggests a strong bullish sentiment is returning to the crypto market, alongside a pronounced squeeze on short sellers, which reinforces upward price momentum as traders scramble to cover their positions.
