A Cedar Falls-based bitcoin mining company, Simple Mining, has announced plans to construct a facility on approximately four acres within the Cascade Industrial Park. This initiative has garnered support from the local economic development corporation, with Ken McDermott, president of the Cascade Economic Development Corporation (CEDC), providing insights into the project.
Simple Mining intends to house computer servers in about 40 specially designed crypto mining containers, each measuring approximately 160 square feet and resting on concrete platforms. McDermott clarified that this setup differs from a traditional data center, emphasizing the unique structure that will cater to bitcoin mining operations.
However, not everyone in the vicinity is entirely on board with the development. Joan Hoffmann, a resident of the Oak Hill neighborhood adjacent to the industrial park, expressed her concerns regarding the potential impact on local resources, specifically water and power consumption. With many of her summer days spent outdoors, Hoffmann is worried that the noise and activity from the mining operation could disturb the tranquil environment she enjoys, including the sounds of nature and children playing in the nearby park.
Addressing these concerns, McDermott assured that the containers would be self-cooled, promoting efficient use of water and power. Additionally, an agreement between Simple Mining and the CEDC stipulates that noise levels emanating from the property must not exceed those of a normal conversation. “As far as the quality of living in Oak Hill, you’re not even going to know it’s there,” he stated, aiming to ease residents’ worries about the project’s impact on their daily lives.
The agreement also emphasizes transparency, with Simple Mining required to disclose its anticipated electrical consumption to the CEDC before finalizing the purchase of the land. McDermott further indicated that once Simple Mining completes its plans, these will be submitted for approval to the CEDC, followed by a public meeting aimed at addressing community questions and concerns regarding the facility.
The project holds the potential to create approximately eight new jobs within the area. However, before any construction can commence, the city must approve the necessary building permits, marking another step in the development process for this significant investment in the Cascade community.
