Bitget, the largest Universal Exchange (UEX) globally, has announced a significant philanthropic commitment following a devastating fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po, Hong Kong. The fire, which erupted on November 26, is considered one of the deadliest residential incidents in recent decades, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 128 lives and injuring over 70 others. Additionally, more than 900 residents have been displaced, forcing them into temporary accommodations.
In response to this tragedy, Bitget has pledged a donation of $1.54 million USD (approximately $12 million HKD) to assist families affected by the fire and to contribute to local rebuilding efforts. This substantial donation reflects the company’s commitment to supporting the community during a time of dire need and was executed on the same day of the announcement.
As rescue operations and investigations continue, local authorities have initiated inquiries into the fire’s cause, focusing on the renovation works and the safety of materials used in the residential complex. Families remain in distress, actively searching for missing relatives while grappling with the aftermath of the disaster.
To ensure the timely and effective distribution of the funds, Bitget has partnered with three trusted charities in Hong Kong. Specifically, Yan Chai Hospital has received $5 million HKD (approximately $640,000 USD) aimed at bolstering emergency medical services and rehabilitation efforts for those injured. The Salvation Army Hong Kong has also been allocated $3.5 million HKD (around $450,000 USD) to provide essential financial assistance, temporary accommodation, and necessary supplies to households that have lost their homes and livelihoods. Another $3.5 million HKD has gone to Po Leung Kuk to facilitate psychological counseling, community outreach, and ongoing support for survivors and affected residents in the neighborhood.
Bitget’s relief fund is structured to ensure that every dollar is utilized transparently and effectively, complementing government efforts in dealing with this disaster. The coordinated approach aims to deliver medical assistance, financial support, and mental health services while addressing the community’s immediate and long-term recovery needs.
In a show of solidarity, Bitget has expressed its condolences to the families who have lost loved ones and hopes that affected residents can rebuild their communities swiftly and safely.
