Caitlin Clark’s status may prevent her from continuing in the WNBA season, but her digital legacy is soaring, as evidenced by a recent record-breaking sale of a one-of-one NFT on the Panini blockchain. On September 8, Clark’s Green Kaboom digital card sold for a staggering $175,000 just a day after being released from a digital pack. This sale marks the largest transaction ever recorded on the Panini blockchain since its inception in January 2020.
The buyer, known as spinotron, is a prominent figure in the digital card collecting community, boasting an extensive collection that includes over 7,269 NFTs and 7,396 unopened packs. A longtime enthusiast of physical card collecting, particularly rare Kobe Bryant cards, spinotron views digital cards as a simpler alternative, eliminating challenges related to authentication, grading, and the logistics of physical transfer.
“I’m a big physical collector of 17 years,” spinotron shared. “Panini Blockchain is 5-10% of my portfolio. I’m always chasing the best cards, which I would call ‘coffin cards.’ They are hugely irreplaceable, historically significant, and represent one’s identity for the long term, if not forever.”
The Clark Kaboom Green 1/1 card is regarded by spinotron as a “coffin card,” emphasizing its unique status and importance. The individual who initially pulled the card, recognized as a primary buyer on chain, typically does not sell notable cards. Anticipating potential emotional attachment forming, spinotron decided to pursue the card aggressively. Initially offering $110,000, he was surprised to see it listed at $175,000 shortly thereafter. As bidding escalated, he faced competition from another collector who ultimately drove the price to $135,000. To secure the card and avoid further bidding wars, spinotron opted to pay the full asking price.
Simultaneously, the physical version of Caitlin Clark’s Green Kaboom 1/1 is currently auctioned at Goldin Auctions, with the highest bid reaching $183,000 as of now. That auction concludes on Saturday, September 13.
Reflecting on the acquisition, the seller expressed satisfaction with the deal. Spinotron had recently purchased a Steph Curry Green Kaboom NFT for $99,999 and was pleased to add the Clark card to his growing collection.
The Clark Green Kaboom card originates from the 2024 WNBA Rookie Royalty digital packs, available through a Dutch auction that began on August 28. The packs had a starting price of $15,000, with a descending price structure that ultimately led to selling out at $1,100. The average sale price was around $1,400.
Spinotron expressed confidence in his $175,000 investment, emphasizing his understanding of the card’s significance and market demand. “I didn’t test his limit. The Panini blockchain has made significant progress recently, validating my vision and logic, and surely makes me more bullish,” he stated, noting that many prominent physical collectors are transitioning to this digital format for the long term.
The landscape of physical card collecting is increasingly morphing from a casual hobby into a capital-driven market, enhanced by the transparency and data analytics capabilities that the Panini NFT ecosystem offers.
