Cboe Global Markets announced plans to launch continuous futures for bitcoin and ether, effective November 10. This initiative is part of the exchange’s strategy to broaden its cryptocurrency offerings amid a shifting regulatory landscape that has become increasingly welcoming to digital assets.
The introduction of continuous futures marks a significant evolution from traditional futures contracts, which typically necessitate the periodic rolling of positions. Instead, Cboe’s continuous futures will feature long-dated contracts with a remarkable 10-year expiration. This design aims to streamline position management for traders, simplifying the process of betting or hedging against future price movements in the digital asset market.
Futures contracts provide a mechanism for investors to speculate on or protect against the future prices of assets without actual ownership. With this new product, U.S. traders will gain an opportunity to secure long-term exposure to cryptocurrencies within a regulated environment, allowing for greater stability and security in their trading activities.
Cboe is strategically enhancing its futures product lineup, which already includes the well-known Cboe Volatility Index (VIX) futures. The continual expansion into crypto derivatives aligns with the growing interest among retail traders seeking diversified options. The continuous futures for bitcoin and ether will be cleared through Cboe Clear U.S., a derivatives clearing firm regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), ensuring compliance and reliability.
This development in Cboe’s offerings reflects a broader trend among exchanges to innovate and adapt to the dynamic aspects of the cryptocurrency market, catering to the diverse needs of all types of market participants.
