In a heartfelt announcement shared via Instagram, the venue expressed gratitude for its role in nurturing the alternative music scene, stating, “For almost 30 years, Chain Reaction has proudly fostered the alt-music scene by creating a space for a community that the outside world ‘just didn’t get.’”
Chain Reaction has been known as a launching pad for many local and up-and-coming bands, serving as an essential platform for artists to showcase their talents. The final performances scheduled for December 18 and 19 will feature the Rancho Santa Margarita-based band Movements and Militarie Gun, along with Underbrook and Cherdomingo, promising to celebrate the venue’s rich legacy. The closure marks the second time Chain Reaction has faced such uncertainty. In 2020, the venue was on the verge of shutting down due to the pandemic, which halted live performances for an extended period. Despite receiving some financial support through a Small Business Administration loan, the ownership concluded that it would not be enough to sustain operations during the prolonged restrictions. Community support surged at that time, with various bands rallying to save the venue, including a unique collaboration with the apparel company Violent Gentlemen to create merchandise intended to raise funds for Chain Reaction.
Further highlighting the venue’s significance, Thrice sold Chain Reaction-themed shirts, featuring a nostalgic image from their performance there, encapsulating the spirit of togetherness once again. Recently, a new partnership with Dixon Flannel Co. also emerged, as they released a stylish flannel paying tribute to Chain Reaction’s undeniable influence on Southern California’s underground music scene.
Opened in 1996 in a modest strip mall, Chain Reaction initially operated under the name Public Storage Coffee Lounge before rebranding. It quickly became a favorite hangout for youth, typically between the ages of 15 and 20, looking to experience live music without age barriers. The parking lot often buzzed with anticipation, with fans skateboarding and gathering before entering the venue.
