In an eagerly awaited return, Charlie McAvoy made his comeback for the Boston Bruins during their matchup against the Winnipeg Jets. McAvoy had been sidelined for 11 games due to a facial injury sustained from a puck during a contest against the Montreal Canadiens on November 15, which necessitated facial surgery.
Following the morning skate, McAvoy expressed optimism about his return, stating, “Today felt good.” The defenseman has had a solid performance prior to his injury, recording 14 assists in 19 games and leading the Bruins’ defense with an average time on ice of 23 minutes and 46 seconds per game.
The recovery period was a challenging one for McAvoy, who reported losing 20 pounds while adhering to a liquid diet prescribed after his surgery. This diet was intended to last six weeks, during which he focused on rebuilding his conditioning. “Definitely getting better,” he remarked. “(I’m) able to do more so you’re able to kind of work on your conditioning again, getting that part back… The best way to get conditioning back is to just play in the game.”
The Bruins, currently holding a record of 18 wins and 13 losses, managed a 6-5-0 record during McAvoy’s absence. Coach Marco Sturm acknowledged the impact of McAvoy’s presence both on the ice and in the locker room. “I only see half of it because most of the time, I’m in the coaches room, but just to see him out there, his presence alone he brings on the ice and off the ice… It’s nice to have him back and seeing that smile on his face. It’s been a while; it’s been a tough road for him. He’s our leader,” Sturm noted.
Fans and teammates alike are thrilled to see McAvoy back in action, as he continues to be a vital component of the Bruins’ defense and overall team dynamics.
