In a significant move reflecting the Oklahoma City Thunder’s ambitions, Chet Holmgren has signed a five-year rookie contract extension valued at up to $250 million. The deal, announced in July 2025, underscores Holmgren’s pivotal role in the team’s future alongside fellow star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The contract’s sizable financial backing not only provides Holmgren with security but also positions him as a cornerstone in the franchise’s ongoing efforts to build a championship dynasty centered on their youthful talent.
Holmgren’s new contract is fully guaranteed and comes despite previous concerns regarding his ability to stay healthy. It guarantees him a role for the 2030–31 campaign and aligns with his eligibility for a deal calculated at 25% of the salary cap, featuring an 8% annual escalator. This structure allows for maximum potential earnings, approximating around $239 million over the course of the extension.
Following a successful postseason where the Thunder claimed the NBA championship, this contract marks a third major extension for the franchise. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who emerged as the NBA scoring champion and MVP during the Finals, was given a four-year contract worth $285 million. The Thunder also secured Jalen Williams, another essential player from their championship roster, reinforcing their commitment to maintaining their young core.
As Holmgren prepares to enter the final year of his rookie contract, he is set to earn $13.7 million, with his salary projected to jump to approximately $41 million for the 2026–2027 season when the new extension kicks in. Throughout the Thunder’s championship journey, Holmgren showcased his talents with averages of 15.2 points and 8.7 rebounds over 23 playoff games, contributing significantly in crucial moments, including the thrilling seven-game series against the Indiana Pacers in the Finals.
General Manager Sam Presti noted the challenges faced by Holmgren and his teammates throughout the season, particularly the resilience demonstrated when key players returned from injuries. Holmgren’s ability to adapt and contribute despite these adversities has been a focal point for Presti, showcasing the selflessness that has become a hallmark of the Thunder’s team dynamics.
In the previous season, Holmgren recorded impressive stats, shooting 49% from the field and 37.9% from three-point range, thereby achieving averages of 15 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and 2.2 blocks per game. After being selected as the second overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, Holmgren faced a foot injury that sidelined him during his rookie season. However, he made a successful return, playing all 82 games in the 2023-2024 season, and despite battling a hip injury in the subsequent season, he still established himself as a key player during the Thunder’s championship run, recording eight double-doubles during the playoffs.
With Holmgren’s impactful presence and talent solidified through this new contract, the Oklahoma City Thunder are poised to build on their recent success and further establish themselves in the league by nurturing their promising roster.
