The search for the next head coach of the New York Giants is heating up, with Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula emerging as the frontrunner. According to Kalshi, a New York-based financial exchange and prediction market, Shula currently holds a 28 percent chance of being hired for the position.
Shula, 39, is not only the son of former NFL coach Dave Shula but also the grandson of legendary football Hall of Famer Don Shula. His experience in the Rams organization since 2017, paired with a strong defensive performance this season—ranking fourth in the league in expected points added (EPA) per play—positions him as a compelling candidate for the Giants.
In the competitive coaching landscape, Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman follows closely with a 22 percent chance of taking the reins in New York. Freeman recently faced scrutiny after his team was controversially excluded from the College Football Playoff, which may heighten the stakes for his potential move to the NFL.
Former Cowboys and Packers coach Mike McCarthy and Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo are tied, each holding a 19 percent chance of landing the Giants’ head coaching position.
Other notable candidates include Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak at 14 percent and Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley with a 10 percent probability.
The Giants have been conducting their coaching search for nearly two months following the dismissal of Brian Daboll on November 9, after a disappointing start to the season that saw them post a record of 2-8 and a cumulative 20-40-1 record during Daboll’s tenure. Co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch expressed the need for improvement, stating, “The past few seasons have been nothing short of disappointing, and we have not met our expectations for this franchise. We understand the frustrations of our fans, and we will work to deliver a significantly improved product.”
