The Indianapolis Colts are facing a significant obstacle following the season-ending injury to starting quarterback Daniel Jones, who has been sidelined due to a torn Achilles tendon. The immediate concern now shifts to Anthony Richardson, whose availability remains uncertain after suffering an orbital fracture before the Week 6 game against the Arizona Cardinals. According to sources familiar with the team’s situation, Richardson has not yet received medical clearance to return to action, raising questions about whether he will be able to participate in any games, including the final stretch of the regular season in 2025.
Richardson’s injury occurred in an unusual incident involving an exercise band, coinciding with cornerback Charvarius Ward sustaining a concussion during pre-game warmups. As it stands, the Colts must rely on rookie quarterback Riley Leonard to lead the team on the field, with Brett Rypien currently positioned on the practice squad. Additionally, tight end Tyler Warren served as an emergency quarterback during recent games.
Drafted as the fourth overall pick in 2023, Richardson demonstrated promise during his tenure as a starter, leading the team in four games as a rookie and 11 in 2024. The Colts initially signed Daniel Jones to provide competition for Richardson, and ultimately, Jones secured the starting role.
Despite Richardson’s contract extending through 2026, his playing status is now in jeopardy, especially as the team enters the final four regular-season games against formidable opponents such as the Seahawks, 49ers, Jaguars, and Texans. The Colts have seen a disappointing downturn, sliding from a strong 7-1 record to 8-5, increasing the likelihood that they might miss the playoffs for a fifth consecutive year. The organization is bracing for the possibility of another postseason absence, which has left fans and analysts alike questioning the team’s trajectory and future direction.
