The founder of cryptocurrency trading platform Crypto.com has made headlines by acquiring the domain name AI.com for a staggering $70 million, a record-breaking sum for a domain sale. Kris Marszalek, co-founder and CEO of Crypto.com, intends to leverage the domain to introduce a new player in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence sector, with a significant promotional push planned during the upcoming Super Bowl.
Marszalek envisions AI.com as a platform offering a personal “AI agent,” designed to assist users in managing messages, utilizing applications, and executing stock trades. He shared insights into his strategic thinking, explaining that he views the long-term potential of artificial intelligence as one of the most significant technological shifts of the current era. The acquisition was motivated by a belief in the enduring value of owning such a pivotal digital property.
Although Marszalek did not publicly disclose the purchase price, it was verified by Larry Fischer, the deal’s broker from GetYourDomain.com, who stated that the transaction took place entirely in cryptocurrency. Fischer remarked on the uniqueness of the asset, emphasizing that opportunities to acquire such defining domain names are exceedingly rare.
Marszalek’s journey began in 2016 when he launched Crypto.com in an already competitive cryptocurrency market, and the platform has since achieved annual revenues exceeding $1.5 billion. With strategic partnerships, including a major collaboration with Trump Media & Technology Group, as well as high-profile marketing initiatives and sponsorships, Crypto.com has positioned itself prominently in the industry.
The hefty investment in AI.com reflects Marszalek’s ambition to maintain competitive advantages in the market. He believes that controlling key digital touchpoints is essential to prevent commoditization in a rapidly evolving technological landscape. He is particularly intrigued by the possibility of owning domains associated with critical technology categories.
Looking ahead, Marszalek aims for AI.com to provide features akin to those of emerging AI platforms, like OpenClaw, while ensuring accessibility for a broader audience. He disclosed that he received substantial offers to sell the domain but sees its ownership as vital for building trust and recognition in one of today’s most dynamic technological markets. With a determined approach akin to pioneering endeavors with Crypto.com, Marszalek is committed to making AI.com a success in the competitive arena of artificial intelligence.
