Orlando Magic guard Desmond Bane has been fined $35,000 by the NBA for an unsportsmanlike incident during a recent game against the New York Knicks. The incident occurred with 6:13 left in the fourth quarter of the Knicks’ 106-100 victory on December 7, where Bane received a technical foul for his actions directed at New York’s OG Anunoby.
The play unfolded as Anunoby executed a breakaway when two defenders from the Magic converged, knocking the ball from his grasp. As Anunoby fell out of bounds, the ball was left beneath the basket. In a moment of frustration, Bane picked up the ball and hurled it at Anunoby, resulting in his technical foul.
This marks the second instance in the current season wherein Bane has been penalized for similar behavior. Previously, during a 127-112 loss to the Atlanta Hawks on November 4, he was ejected for a flagrant foul against Onyeka Okongwu. In that case, after committing a hard foul that sent Okongwu to the ground, Bane retaliated by throwing the ball down onto Okongwu, prompting officials to review the incident before issuing the ejection.
Bane’s actions have raised eyebrows in the league, drawing attention to the need for sportsmanship and respect among players on the court. The fines and penalties underscore the NBA’s commitment to maintaining a standard of conduct that reflects the values of the sport. As Bane adjusts to the backlash from these incidents, the league will continue to monitor player behavior closely to uphold the integrity of the game.
