During the recent winter meetings in Orlando, Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts addressed the participation of key Japanese players, including Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Roki Sasaki, in the upcoming World Baseball Classic (WBC). He described the situation as “very delicate,” particularly given the impact of an extended World Series that wrapped up in November.
Roberts expressed uncertainty over potential limitations on the players, all of whom have had demanding seasons. Ohtani, who underwent elbow surgery in September 2023 and returned to pitching in June, played a pivotal role in the Dodgers’ success, helping the team secure its position as the first repeat World Series champion in 25 years by delivering in the decisive Game 7 against Toronto.
While discussing Ohtani, Roberts acknowledged the need for ongoing dialogue regarding the players’ involvement in the WBC, which runs from March 5 to March 17. Notably, he highlighted the rigorous demands placed on pitchers in the tournament, which include pitch limit regulations and mandatory rest days. Ohtani ascended to new heights during the 2023 WBC, where he was named the MVP after leading Japan to a victory over the United States, striking out his then-teammate Mike Trout to clinch the title.
Roberts mentioned that while he hopes Ohtani could focus primarily on hitting during the WBC, he recognizes the player’s awareness of his own physical condition. “I think the thought is he’s probably just going to hit,” Roberts remarked, though he noted that definitive clarity regarding participation remains elusive.
The manager also touched upon the performances of Yamamoto and Sasaki. Yamamoto, who had previously faced limitations due to injury, had a strong comeback season, pitching over 200 innings, while Sasaki transitioned into a closing role during the postseason.
Roberts emphasized the importance of representing one’s country and conveyed that conversations about the potential risks associated with WBC participation should be prioritized. “You can’t debate the emotion, what a player might feel of this potential opportunity,” he stated.
Looking ahead to the next MLB season, Roberts confirmed that the Dodgers plan to integrate Ohtani into a revamped rotation, stating, “It’s not going to be a regular five-man rotation.” He mentioned the possibility of giving Ohtani extended rest to ensure he remains healthy and effective throughout the season.
In an unrelated note during the meetings, Roberts shared his thoughts on the ongoing discussions regarding salary caps in Major League Baseball, advocating for a system that fosters greater revenue sharing. He expressed that while he has an opinion on the matter, he understands that it may not significantly influence decision-making processes.
As for the Dodgers’ financial outlook, the organization is projected to reach an unprecedented $509.5 million payroll next season, which could set a new record in major league history, placing them well ahead of other teams, including the New York Mets. Roberts firmly expressed confidence in the Dodgers’ ability to thrive under any future regulations, encouraging the league to establish clear rules so the organization can continue to excel.
