The Los Angeles Dodgers have made a significant move in bolstering their bullpen by signing former New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz to a three-year deal worth $69 million. This agreement, reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan and Jorge Castillo, marks a record-breaking average annual value for a relief pitcher, showcasing the Dodgers’ commitment to enhancing their roster for the upcoming season.
Diaz, 31, opted out of a two-year, $38 million contract that was part of the five-year deal he initially signed with the Mets in 2022. This contract was notable for its length, particularly for a relief pitcher, but Diaz’s decision to test free agency comes after a standout season that demonstrated his elite capabilities on the mound.
In the previous season, Diaz delivered an impressive performance, finishing with a 1.63 ERA and successfully converting 28 out of 31 save opportunities. His high-velocity fastball, coupled with a devastating slider, has made him one of the premier closers in baseball, which is reflected in his career statistics. For instance, in 2025, he struck out 98 batters over 66 1/3 innings while issuing only 14 walks, highlighting his effectiveness and control.
Despite his successes, Diaz’s tenure with the Mets was characterized by fluctuations in performance. Throughout his time there, he recorded an ERA below 2.00 on three occasions, but he also had seasons where his ERA climbed to 3.45 or worse, resulting in multiple blown saves.
Diaz’s decision to enter free agency was preceded by an opportunity to accept a qualifying offer of $22.025 million from the Mets, which he declined before the deadline in November. By signing with the Dodgers, New York will now receive a compensatory draft pick following the fourth round of the upcoming draft.
His time with the Mets came to an abrupt halt after he missed the entire 2023 season due to a serious knee injury incurred during a celebration after securing a save in the World Baseball Classic. Diaz had been acquired by the Mets in 2018 as part of a significant seven-player trade from the Seattle Mariners.
With this latest signing, the Dodgers are signaling their intent to compete at the highest level, leveraging Diaz’s proven track record to shore up their bullpen in hopes of a successful season.
