Former U.S. Senator Doug Jones has officially launched his campaign for governor of Alabama, emphasizing the need for a leader who can unify the state and tackle pressing challenges such as economic struggles, healthcare access, and educational reforms. Speaking to a vibrant crowd at a rally in Birmingham, which featured musical guest Jason Isbell, Jones passionately declared, “With your help we can finish what we began. We can build the Alabama we’ve always deserved.” He underscored the importance of choice in leadership, appealing to voters’ desire for effective governance.
The timing of Jones’s campaign kickoff is notable as it coincides with the eighth anniversary of his shock victory over Republican Roy Moore in 2017—a win that briefly shifted the narrative in a state long dominated by Republicans. During the rally, he referenced that pivotal moment, emphasizing that Alabamians had the power to defy political stereotypes. “You stood up and you said something simple but powerful. We can do better,” Jones remarked, alluding to the values he believes transcend political affiliations.
His entry into the gubernatorial race paves the way for a potential rematch with current Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville, who defeated Jones by a significant margin in the 2020 election. Both candidates will face party primaries in May in anticipation of the November gubernatorial election.
Before his foray into politics, Jones garnered national attention as a prosecutor who held accountable two Ku Klux Klansmen responsible for the tragic 1963 church bombing in Birmingham. In an interview, he highlighted the everyday struggles of Alabamians, stating, “People are struggling. They are hurting.” He proposed key initiatives such as establishing a state lottery and expanding Medicaid to improve healthcare access and support rural hospitals, which are at risk of closure.
Jones was particularly critical of Tuberville’s stance against extending subsidies related to the Affordable Care Act, arguing that many working families in Alabama rely on these aids for essential health coverage. Historically, Democrats have faced challenges in Alabama, with the last Democratic governor serving in the late 1990s. Political analysts have noted Jones’s uphill battle ahead, especially after his previous loss, and some have likened his current political prospects to being “the walking dead.”
Despite acknowledging the difficulties of his candidacy, Jones expressed determination, partly motivated by a desire to provide an alternative to Tuberville’s unchallenged path. He pointed to recent Democratic successes in other southern states as evidence that change is possible. In his remarks, he also raised questions about Tuberville’s residency, citing his beach house in Florida and challenging his commitment to Alabama.
While Tuberville’s campaign did not provide immediate comment on the launch of Jones’s campaign, he previously highlighted his successful defeat of Jones in 2020 as evidence of his continued popularity. As Jones re-enters the political arena, supporters like Angela Hornbuckle expressed optimism, saying, “I’m just glad that there’s somebody sensible getting in the race. He proved that he could do it as a senator.” The upcoming months will determine if Jones, with his rich political history, can galvanize the support needed to shift the political landscape in Alabama.
